I drove home from a party one winters night I'd had quite a few drinks but I felt alright It was pouring rain as I approached our town My girlfriend said to me, "John will you slow down" . I turned up the volume of my favorite song And pressed hard on the pedal speeding along I was oblivious to everything that lay up ahead And failed to see a traffic light that was on red. A blue car suddenly appeared right before me I found out later it was a young man and his family There was a loud bang as my airbag deployed My first thoughts were my boss will be annoyed. Next thing I knew there were blue lights all around It was eerily peaceful there wasn't a sound I just felt so tired all I wanted was my bed Looked at my girlfriend and I saw she was dead. The big shock of it all made me come to I thought this is a bad dream; it can't be true A fireman got me out; he had to cut the door There was glass, metal and blood all over the floor. Everything was surreal and I woke up in a cell And this was just the start of my living hell The four people in the other car they too had died Along with my girlfriend, I just broke down and cried. A week later I was in court and I heard a few jeers The Judge showed no mercy and I got twenty years Two witnesses were called and said I was to blame And all I could do was just hang my head in shame. I'm in prison now all my friends disowned me And often get flashbacks of that awful tragedy If only I had got a taxi and chose not to drive Then those five people I killed would still be alive. I have trouble sleeping; I just lie there at night Thinking of a way to try and put things right A year later I wrote a book telling my story Called ,The Drunk Drivers Guilt by John.T. McCrory. If it stops someone driving and having a drink Or even makes a driver just stop and think Then my book will have been worthwhile; every single word. As a warning to others, making my mistakes heard. Thank you very much Line, dispite all the campaigns against it there's still many that choose to risk it with devastating consequences. Hope you're well. Tom

Thank you very much W.A. , It can be very tempting to have one for the road but there's safe ways of enjoying a drink. Tom

Sorry I missed this one, Tom. A powerful poem with a great message. It's like smoking, we all no that it's bad for you, but so many choose to puff away. At least when you smoke you are only killing yourself and not others around you. Belated Congrats on POTW. Charlie

No worries Charlie, if I haven't been too active on soup I spend a week chasing my tail lol. Its really frowned on now but despite campaigns and warnings they still do it. Thank you. Tom

Congratulations Tom. A very powerful message in this poem. I will always remember a girl I went to primary school with got killed by a drunk driver. So many tragedies due to drivers' selfish decisions.

Thank you very much Lisa, sadly the message isn't getting to everybody, those selfish ones think the laws don't apply to them. Tom

Thank you Paul, it seems to be a worldwide problem, so many lives wrecked because someone decided they'd take the risk with no regard for themselves or anyone else. Tom

Late on congratulating you. So many programs and books, yet people do not listen? I am talking to my grandson about alcoholism and also, to never get in a car with a drunk driver. Call a Taxi, or his parents. Many teens here die that way. The other scary part, Tom, is that a person can look perfectly sober but really are unable to drive. I get in no car with anyone who drank. Thanks and Huge Congrats. Panagiota xx

Thanks very much Panagiota, you're right, even with campaigns to educate people some defy the law and risk not only their lives but innocent bystanders, if they want to kill themselves, jump off a cliff, why take others with you, some are so selfish. Tom

Your poem is so well written and very worthy of POTD Tom. Congratulations! We have traffic checks by police during most holidays and it saves a lot of lives because drivers know ahead of time there will be checks so they make sure they have a designated driver who has had no drinks. xxoo

Thank you Connie, that sounds a sensible precaution having those checks, the police here have campaigns at Christmas and still manage to catch drink drivers. Some will never learn. Tom

Thanks Gershon, a tough one for sure, the only way is by education, I remember the anti smoking campaigns with graphic images of rotting lungs, but then people are still smoking. You're right, you can't win. Tom

This scenario in which you have described, happens all over the world. So sad indeed. For those that drink, this should be a wake up call. Don't drive while drunk. Your thoughts tug deeply at my heart. Congratulations Tom, on Poem of the Day. ~ Brandy

Thanks very much Brandy, sadly youre right, it's a worldwide problem and many don't seem to be getting the message that it can cause terrible consequences if they drive while under the influence. Tom Tom

Thank you Sunlite, thankfully I'm not addicted but many are caught in its grip. The problem today is alcohol is easily available and sold cheaply in supermarkets. Tom
