A Day After a Broken Heart
Why, I know it happened just the other day
didn't it?
We loved each other, filled
the hours
and now
it's all so far away.
Didn't we used to live together?
Warm our nights?
And dream about a place all our own?
And didn't it all seem just right?
Songs, they all say love is forever
at least
all the ones that don't have broken hearts.
Can love go and not return ever?
Last night, as I waited for sleep,
the old dreams
played again like a favorite movie
But in an empty theater now.
I lay awake so my eyes might weep.
Somehow, I didn't want to know ...
didn't want
to be just this way for all time.
When I'm older and gray
will I still be alone?
And my heirs
Will I have fathered but verses and rhyme?
