A Broken Locket

She left nothing but a broken locket, snapped in two, as though it had been stepped on. And as I slipped it into my pocket, I realized that she was truly gone. She kept our pictures in that golden heart, saying we would always be together. But before too long, we drifted apart, encountering rogue waves and rough weather. She left me in the wee hours of the night, into the darkness that swallowed her whole. And as she silently slipped out of sight, she cut the tether to my heart and soul. Failing to care enough to retrieve it, she left nothing but a broken locket.
