A Boy I Saw

~ A boy I saw ~

  cradled a glass jar
  full of twigs

  his name tag is off
  on the playground

  quite serious
  eating his lunch

A glass jar! Being a teacher and playground monitor for over 26 years I am horrified at the glass part of this poem.

Ha, ha! I'm a man, who taught at all-male schools. We let boys bring glass jars all the time if they wanted to capture 'neat bugs' on twigs and such during recess... That led to some very teachable moments, I assure you... but never even so much as a cut in my experience with 'zillions' of kids on playgrounds. And, anyway, remember that back then we had mercurochrome and iodine to save the day--- They actually do a helluva better job of healing than the modern ointment-based drek!! ~ So there! LOL!! Just sayin' ~ gw

Thanks so much, ilene. I was hoping someone would feel the way you did about the boy with the glass jar. Much appreciated, Gershon
