A Blanket of Love

Two hearts forever tethered to each other,
fear, which one, Death, will visit first.
And as time passes, a sadness swells
within our hearts, thinking about it.
Acceptance of the inevitability of the other's death;
triggers apprehension, a very human experience.
And such concerns can overwhelm conjoined hearts;
proving love is a two-edged sword.
Memories entertain like-minded minds,
sharing theaters of recognition.
And watching old family films of days gone by;
chuckle, recalling long-forgotten escapades
of a lifetime of dreams, we equally shared.
Having lived full lives with no regrets
two half souls fused into one;
warmly wrapped in a blanket of love.
Fond thoughts oft drift to yesteryears;
trying to offset the tide of tears
that start to ebb and flow as the last years unfold.
The question of who will die first;
fuels fear of uncertainty within both our hearts.
When my time comes to pass, I'll close my eyes,
let out a breath, and, with a sigh, slip away!
Dying's not the scary part;
leaving my soulmate behind, is!
