A Blanket of Love

Two hearts emotionally tethered to each other;
fear which one death may choose to visit first.
And as time passes, sadness swells
within their hearts thinking about it.
Acceptance of the inevitability of the other's death;
triggers apprehension, a very human experience.
Such feelings can overwhelm aging hearts;
love is a two-edged sword.
Memories entertain like-minded minds;
exploring their theater of recognition.
And like family films of days gone by,
they chuckle at long-forgotten escapades;
of a lifetime of hopes, equally shared.
They recall their lives with no regret;
warmly wrapped in a blanket of love,
sharing hearts, two have morphed into one.
Fond thoughts oft drift to yesteryears;
trying to offset the tide of tears
that start to ebb and flow as the last years unfold.
The question of who will die first;
fuels fear of uncertainty within conjoined hearts.
When my time comes to pass; I'll close my eyes,
let out a breath, and, with a sigh, slip away!
Dying's not the scary part;
leaving my soulmate behind is!
