A Birdhouse Renovated

Many birdhouses seen
In the different shape
On a backyard fence
In different colors

The squirrel is searching
For a place to nest
One squirrel chased a bird
From the fenced birdhouse

The squirrel ate the eggs
A mother bird laid
Then when shew was done
The squirr4el got busy

She enlarged the hole
She made it bigger
Then the squirrel decided
To make another

Entrance to the house
She chewed a hole
Now for the side door
Making it larger

Nature can seem unfair and cruel to us and I do feel for that poor bird. Squirrels are quiet destructive. I use a water pistol to deter cats away from birds or fledglings they have their eye on...seems to work but have not tried it on a squirrel. I do like squirrels too. Emilia : )

So now Emilia I do not trust squirrels. they get their nuts from somewhere else now. Yes squirrels do go to the birdfeeders I dislkie it when the squirrel chases the mother bird away from the house, then eats the eggs that are there to be laid. /DaRLENE/

Hello Emilia, Yes nature can be unfair at times. Oh yes squirrels are destructive. last year the deck got chewed up by a squirrel. Because I did not feed it peanuts. In the spring the squirrel chewed a hole for a door in a birdhouse. that squirrel made two big holes. I like squirrels to not ass much as I use to.

An engrossing but sad story. I feel sorry for the bird whose eggs were eaten by the squirrel. Well narrated, dear Darlene.

makes me so glad we don't have squirrels on our Island, they did talk of introducing them but it would devastate the existing wildlife. hugs jan xx

Naughty squirrel, chasing the birds and robbing their house. Poor birds. You described very well that situation, which is sad but it's nature. Ones survive destroying others. I enjoyed a lot this little story. My dear friend, have a lovely afternoon. Hugs/María

Poor mother bird, no chance for her fledglings to survive, best to relocate. Naughty squirrel! In a part of England where we stayed with cousins for a couple of days, squirrels had overrun their suburb and were a huge pest, as well as foxes. But i do love looking at foxes they are very cute! Hugs and love, Jennifer.

Hi Darlene, nice poem. Once I bought a bird feeder, but the squirrels ate all the food, so I strung the feeder on a thin string, but the squirrels chewed the string, so the feeder fell, and the squirrels still ate the food!

Hello David, Those squirrels will eat anything. I am not surprised that the squirrel ate the birdseeds. I saw a squirrel chew a hole in a birdhouse to make an opening on the side of the birdhouse. the squir43l laid her eggs and brought up her babies there. They also chewed upp the deck if y0u dod not feed them. also climb up the screen door for attention to be fed. Enjoy your day my friend. /Darlene/

Yep, squirrel is a squatter. One would think there is enough real estate for all in the wild, but not for this furry little thief. Got to love them anyway. Lovely poem Darlene.

Yes, I hear you. I will never understand the wisdom behind such cruelty. Plenty seeds, nuts etc. for squirrel to eat. I hate to kill anything, even try to shoo crickets out of the house before the cat gets them. Becoming a real softy in my old age.

Hello Joe DiMino, It upset me that the squirrel ate the eggs of the mother birds. it upsets me that the squirrel chased the mother bird from her home. I guess that is nature. yet it is still un fair. Enjoy your evening my friend. /Darlene/

Birdhouses in some areas are a very precious commodity for certain species, and there are many friendly ways to squirrel proof them. Haphazardly setting up birdhouses just to have the eggs destroyed or eaten is not nice. Just a thought. Take care.
