Great Poetry Does Not Comes from Emotion

You often hear people say that good poetry comes from the heart and that it’s best to write purely from emotion. However, this is not true. Writing poetry with emotion as your impetus is not enough; much more is needed because poetry is an art form.

Consider this analogy: if you are painting a picture based solely on raw emotion, simply throwing paint onto the canvas, it may capture attention for a moment, but what kind of lasting impact does that kind of art have? While we remember artists like Jackson Pollock for their innovative approaches to painting, the works that truly endure, that are truly historic in our memories, involve much more than just unfiltered emotional expression. True art, including true poetry, requires thought, preparation, refinement, and stylistic expertise.

So, don’t fall into the trap of thinking that great poetry comes solely from emotion. In fact, emotion may be the least important factor in writing great poetry.

I personally find poetry written from the heart to be much more hard hitting & raw than intellectually charged pieces that can often be cold & clinical, but we are all different individuals with unique minds. To each, their own.

@Brian, the individual reader determines what is "great poetry." However, if enough people agree that it is "great poetry," then it becomes "historically" great or famous.

Who is to say TPS what 'great poetry is' or what is 'truly historic in 'OUR' memories ? ....Our art is(has always been) a subjective minority pursuit !.. The art of poetry can have many different interpretatons , when read by another and of course particularly so,if recited aloud... The beauty of our poetic art (just like paintings etc) is seen through the 'eyes' of a(any) beholder (better yet listener).,...always..an added bonus to the satisfaction & joy of the creative process itself (emotionally or otherwise)
