You often hear people say that good poetry comes from the heart and that it’s best to write purely from emotion. However, this is not true. Writing poetry with emotion as your impetus is not enough; much more is needed because poetry is an art form.
Consider this analogy: if you are painting a picture based solely on raw emotion, simply throwing paint onto the canvas, it may capture attention for a moment, but what kind of lasting impact does that kind of art have? While we remember artists like Jackson Pollock for their innovative approaches to painting, the works that truly endure, that are truly historic in our memories, involve much more than just unfiltered emotional expression. True art, including true poetry, requires thought, preparation, refinement, and stylistic expertise.
So, don’t fall into the trap of thinking that great poetry comes solely from emotion. In fact, emotion may be the least important factor in writing great poetry.
