Tanka Triptych

Posted by John Anderson on 8/11/2025 10:49:15 AM

A tanka triptych is simply a set of three separate tanka poems arranged together so they form a linked sequence that expands on the concept of a haiku, senru and tanka in exploring different views with a pivot point in three verses as well as internally.

A tanka is a traditional Japanese form with 5 lines and a 5-7-5-7-7 syllable pattern. The tanka often contains a pivot or shift in thought, image, or emotion between the first three lines and the last two.

In a triptych, each tanka works like an individual image or scene, but when you read them together they: Explore different facets of the same theme.
Tanka 1 — introduces the theme, scene, or emotional ground, as scene 1
Tanka 2 — develops or deepens it, sometimes offering a counterpoint as scene 2
Tanka 3 — concludes, integrates or confounds the whole in a fresh or unexpected way.
