Days of Pie and Coffee

 A motorist once said to me, 
and this was in the country, 
on a county lane, a motorist 
slowed his vehicle as I was 
walking my dear old collie,
Sithney, by the side of the road, 
and the motorist came to a halt 
mildly alarming both Sithney and myself, 
not yet accustomed to automobiles, 
and this particular motorist 
sent a little spasm of fright up our spines, 
which in turn panicked the driver a bit 
and it seemed as if we were off to a bad start, 
and that's when Sithney began to bark 
and the man could not be heard, that is, 
if he was speaking or trying to speak 
because I was commanding Sithnewy to be silent, 
though, indeed I was sympathetic 
to his emotional excitement.
It was, as I recall, a day of prodigious beauty.
April 21, 1932--clouds like the inside of your head explained.
Bluebirds, too numerous to mention.
The clover calling you by name.
And fields oozing green.
And this motorist from nowhere moving his lips like the wings of a butterfly and nothing coming out, and Sithney silent now.
He was no longer looking at us, but straight ahead where his election was in doubt.
"That's a fine dog," he said.
"Collies are made in heaven.
" Well, if I were a voting man I'd vote for you, I said.
"A bedoozling day to be lost in the country, I say.
Leastways, I am a misplaced individual.
" We introduced ourselves and swapped a few stories.
He was a veteran and a salesmen who didn't believe in his product-- I've forgotten what it was--hair restorer, parrot feed--and he enjoyed nothing more then a a day spent meandering the back roads in his jalopy.
I gave him directions to the Denton farm, but I doubt that he followed them, he didn't seem to be listening, and it was getting late and Sithney had an idea of his own and I don't know why I am remembering this now, just that he summed himself up by saying "I've missed too many boats" and all these years later I keep thinking that was a man who loved to miss boats, but he didn't miss them that much.

Ghazal of the Better-Unbegun

 Too volatile, am I?too voluble?too much a word-person?
I blame the soup:I'm a primordially
stirred person.
Two pronouns and a vehicle was Icarus with wings.
The apparatus of his selves made an ab- surd person.
The sound I make is sympathy's:sad dogs are tied afar.
But howling I become an ever more un- heard person.
I need a hundred more of you to make a likelihood.
The mirror's not convincing-- that at-best in- ferred person.
As time's revealing gets revolting, I start looking out.
Look in and what you see is one unholy blurred person.
The only cure for birth one doesn't love to contemplate.
Better to be an unsung song, an unoc- curred person.
McHugh, you'll be the death of me -- each self and second studied! Addressing you like this, I'm halfway to the third person.

The Twenty Hoss-Power Shay

 You have heard of the wonderful one-hoss shay
That was built in such a logical way
It ran a hundred years to a day.
And then, of a sudden, it up and bust, And all that was left was a mound of dust? Holmes—O.
W.
—told it well In a rhyme of his—what there was to tell— But the one-hoss shay wasn’t “one, two, three” With a vehicle once belonged to me.
One hoss? No, sir! Not six nor nine— Twenty there were in this rig of mine! Twenty hosses as tough as rocks, All caged up in a sort of box That stood jist back of the forward wheels! Right! She was one of those automobiles With twenty hosses bottled inside— Hosses that not only pull but ride! Wonder what Holmes would have had to say If the mare had rode in his one-hoss shay! I reckon the shay would have logicked out Before the century rolled about.
Well, this big touring car, I say, Was built just like the one-hoss shay— Some dependable, logical way— Flipflaps, dujabs, wheels and things, Levers, thing-gum-bobs and springs, Hub, and felloe, and hoss-power chest— One part just as strong as the rest; So “logic is logic,” as Holmes would say, And no one part could first give way.
Wonderful vehicle, you’ll admit, With not one flaw in the whole of it; As long as I had it, I declare I hadn’t one cent to pay for repair, It couldn’t break down because, you see, It was such a logical symphony.
Now for my tale.
We’re not so slow These days as a hundred years ago, And it’s like enough that the one-hoss shay, Ambling along in its sleepy way, Should creep a century ‘thout a break, But nowadays we aim to make A pace that is something like a pace, And if that old shay got in our race It would stand the pressure twenty days And go to the home of played-out shays.
“Logic is logic.
” Just figure this out— For I know just what I’m talking about:— If a one-hoss vehicle, genus shays, Will stand our pressure twenty days, Then, vice versa, a twenty-hoss shay Should stand the pressure just one day;— Well, mine is a logical automobile, From rubber tire to steering wheel.
I bought it one morning at just 10.
42, And the very next morning what did it do, Right on the second, but up and bust! Talk of the old shay’s pile of dust— That’s not logical; my mobile Vanished completely! Brass and steel, Iron and wood and rubber tire Went right up in a gush of fire, And in half a minute a gassy smell Was all I had left by which to tell I ever owned a touring car,— And then that vanished, and there you are! End of my twenty hoss-power shay.

The Quality Of Sprawl

 Sprawl is the quality
of the man who cut down his Rolls-Royce
into a farm utility truck, and sprawl
is what the company lacked when it made repeated efforts
to buy the vehicle back and repair its image.
Sprawl is doing your farm work by aeroplane, roughly, or driving a hitchhiker that extra hundred miles home.
It is the rococo of being your own still centre.
It is never lighting cigars with ten dollar notes: that's idiot ostentation and murder of starving people.
Nor can it be bought with the ash of million dollar deeds.
Sprawl lengthens the legs; it trains greyhounds on liver and beer.
Sprawl almost never says, Why not?, with palms comically raised nor can it be dressed for, not even in running shoes worn with mink and a nose ring.
That is Society.
That's Style.
Sprawl is more like the thirteenth banana in a dozen or anyway the fourteenth.
Sprawl is Hank Stamper in Never Give an Inch bisecting an obstructive official's desk with a chain saw.
Not harming the official.
Sprawl is never brutal, though it's often intransigent.
Sprawl is never Simon de Montfort at a town-storming: Kill them all! God will know His own.
Knowing the man's name this was said to might be sprawl.
Sprawl occurs in art.
The fifteenth to twenty-first lines in a sonnet, for example.
And in certain paintings.
I have sprawl enough to have forgotten which paintings.
Turner's glorious Burning of the Houses of Parliament comes to mind, a doubling bannered triumph of sprawl - except he didn't fire them.
Sprawl gets up the noses of many kinds of people (every kind that comes in kinds) whose futures don't include it.
Some decry it as criminal presumption, silken-robed Pope Alexander dividing the new world between Spain and Portugal.
If he smiled in petto afterwards, perhaps the thing did have sprawl.
Sprawl is really classless, though.
It is John Christopher Frederick Murray asleep in his neighbours' best bed in spurs and oilskins, but not having thrown up: sprawl is never Calum, who, in the loud hallway of our house reinvented the Festoon.
Rather it's Beatrice Miles going twelve hundred ditto in a taxi, No Lewd Advances, no Hitting Animals, no Speeding, on the proceeds of her two-bob-a-sonnet Shakespeare readings.

No, sprawl is full gloss murals on a council-house wall.
Sprawl leans on things.
It is loose-limbed in its mind.
Reprimanded and dismissed, it listens with a grin and one boot up on the rail of possibility.
It may have to leave the Earth.
Being roughly Christian, it scratches the other cheek And thinks it unlikely.
Though people have been shot for sprawl.

The Priestess of Panormita

 Hear me, Lord of the Stars!
For thee I have worshipped ever
