Church Going

Once i am sure there's nothing going on
I step inside letting the door thud shut.
Another church: matting seats and stone and little books; sprawlings of flowers cut For Sunday brownish now; some brass and stuff Up at the holy end; the small neat organ; And a tense musty unignorable silence Brewed God knows how long.
Hatless I take off My cylce-clips in awkward revrence Move forward run my hand around the font.
From where i stand the roof looks almost new-- Cleaned or restored? someone would know: I don't.
Mounting the lectern I peruse a few hectoring large-scale verses and pronouce Here endeth much more loudly than I'd meant The echoes snigger briefly.
Back at the door I sign the book donate an Irish sixpence Reflect the place was not worth stopping for.
Yet stop I did: in fact I often do And always end much at a loss like this Wondering what to look for; wondering too When churches fall completely out of use What we shall turn them into if we shall keep A few cathedrals chronically on show Their parchment plate and pyx in locked cases And let the rest rent-free to rain and sheep.
Shall we avoid them as unlucky places? Or after dark will dubious women come To make their children touvh a particular stone; Pick simples for a cancer; or on some Advised night see walking a dead one? Power of some sort or other will go on In games in riddles seemingly at random; But superstition like belief must die And what remains when disbelief has gone? Grass weedy pavement brambles butress sky.
A shape less recognisable each week A purpose more obscure.
I wonder who Will be the last the very last to seek This place for whta it was; one of the crew That tap and jot and know what rood-lofts were? Some ruin-bibber randy for antique Or Christmas-addict counting on a whiff Of grown-and-bands and organ-pipes and myrrh? Or will he be my representative Bored uninformed knowing the ghostly silt Dispersed yet tending to this cross of ground Through suburb scrub because it held unspilt So long and equably what since is found Only in separation--marriage and birth And death and thoughts of these--for which was built This special shell? For though I've no idea What this accoutred frowsty barn is worth It pleases me to stand in silence here; A serious house on serious earth it is In whose blent air all our compulsions meet Are recognisd and robed as destinies.
And that much never can be obsolete Since someone will forever be surprising A hunger in himself to be more serious And gravitating with it to this ground Which he once heard was proper to grow wise in If only that so many dead lie round.

November Cotton Flower

 Boll-weevil's coming, and the winter's cold,
Made cotton-stalks look rusty, seasons old,
And cotton, scarce as any southern snow,
Was vanishing; the branch, so pinched and slow,
Failed in its function as the autumn rake;
Drouth fighting soil had caused the soil to take
All water from the streams; dead birds were found
In wells a hundred feet below the ground--
Such was the season when the flower bloomed.
Old folks were startled, and it soon assumed Significance.
Superstition saw Something it had never seen before: Brown eyes that loved without a trace of fear, Beauty so sudden for that time of year.

Verses on Sir Joshua Reynolds Painted Window at New College Oxford

 Ah, stay thy treacherous hand, forbear to trace
Those faultless forms of elegance and grace!
Ah, cease to spread the bright transparent mass,
With Titian's pencil, o'er the speaking glass!
Nor steal, by strokes of art with truth combin'd,
The fond illusions of my wayward mind!
For long, enamour'd of a barbarous age,
A faithless truant to the classic page;
Long have I lov'd to catch the simple chime
Of minstrel-harps, and spell the fabling rime;
To view the festive rites, the knightly play,
That deck'd heroic Albion's elder day;
To mark the mouldering halls of barons bold,
And the rough castle, cast in giant mould;

But chief, enraptur'd have I lov'd to roam, A lingering votary, the vaulted dome, Where the tall shafts, that mount in massy pride, Their mingling branches shoot from side to side; Where elfin sculptors, with fantastic clew, O'er the long roof their wild embroidery drew; Where Superstition with capricious hand In many a maze the wreathed window plann'd, With hues romantic ting'd the gorgeous pane, To fill with holy light the wondrous fane; To aid the builder's model, richly rude, By no Vitruvian symmetry subdu'd; To suit the genius of the mystic pile: Whilst as around the far-retiring aisle, And fretted shrines, with hoary trophies hung, Her dark illumination wide she flung, With new solemnity, the nooks profound, The caves of death, and the dim arches frown'd.
From bliss long felt unwillingly we part: Ah, spare the weakness of a lover's heart! Chase not the phantoms of my fairy dream, Phantoms that shrink at Reason's painful gleam! That softer touch, insidious artist, stay, Nor to new joys my struggling breast betray! Such was a pensive bard's mistaken strain.

The Road to Roundabout

 Some say that Guy of Warwick 
The man that killed the Cow, 
And brake the mighty Boar alive 
Beyond the bridge at Slough; 
Went up against a Loathly Worm 
That wasted all the Downs, 
And so the roads they twist and squirm 
(If a may be allowed the term) 
From the writhing of the stricken Worm 
That died in seven towns.
I see no scientific proof That this idea is sound, And I should say they wound about To find the town of Roundabout, The merry town of Roundabout, That makes the world go round.
Some say that Robin Goodfellow, Whose lantern lights the meads (To steal a phrase Sir Walter Scott In heaven no longer needs), Such dance around the trysting-place The moonstruck lover leads; Which superstition I should scout There is more faith in honest doubt (As Tennyson has pointed out) Than in those nasty creeds.
But peace and righteousness (St John) In Roundabout can kiss, And since that's all that's found about The pleasant town of Roundabout, The roads they simply bound about To find out where it is.
Some say that when Sir Lancelot Went forth to find the Grail, Grey Merlin wrinkled up the roads For hope that he would fail; All roads lead back to Lyonesse And Camelot in the Vale, I cannot yield assent to this Extravagant hypothesis, The plain, shrewd Briton will dismiss Such rumours (Daily Mail).
But in the streets of Roundabout Are no such factions found, Or theories to expound about, Or roll upon the ground about, In the happy town of Roundabout, That makes the world go round.

At Corfu

 In seventeen hundred, a much hated sultan
visited us twice, finally
dying of headaches in the south harbor.
Ever since, visitors have come to the island.
They bring their dogs and children.
The ferry boat with a red cross freshly painted on it lifts in uneven drafts of smoke and steam devising the mustard horizon that is grotesque with purple thunderheads.
In the rising winds the angry sea birds circle the trafficking winter ghosts who are electric like the locusts at Patmos.
They are gathering sage in improvised slings along the hillsides, they are the lightning strikes scattering wild cats from the bone yard: here, since the war, fertilizer trucks have idled much like the island itself.
We blame the wild cats who have eaten all the jeweled yellow snakes of the island.
When sufficiently distant, the outhouses have a sweetness like frankincense.
A darker congregation, we think the last days began when they stripped the postage stamps of their lies and romance.
The chaff of the hillsides rises like a cramp, defeating a paring of moon .

.
its hot, modest conjunction of planets .
.
.
And with this sudden hard rain the bells on the ferry boat begin a long elicit angelus.
Two small Turkish boys run out into the storm-- here, by superstition, they must laugh and sing--like condemned lovers, ashen and kneeling, who are being washed by their dead grandmothers' grandmothers.

The Confessor a Sanctified Tale

 When SUPERSTITION rul'd the land
And Priestcraft shackled Reason,
At GODSTOW dwelt a goodly band,
Grey monks they were, and but to say
They were not always giv'n to pray,
Would have been construed Treason.
Yet some did scoff, and some believ'd That sinners were themselves deceiv'd; And taking Monks for more than men They prov'd themselves, nine out of ten, Mere dupes of these Old Fathers hoary; But read--and mark the story.
Near, in a little Farm, there liv'd A buxom Dame of twenty three; And by the neighbours 'twas believ'd A very Saint was She! Yet, ev'ry week, for some transgression, She went to sigh devout confession.
For ev'ry trifle seem'd to make Her self-reproving Conscience ache; And Conscience, waken'd, 'tis well known, Will never let the Soul alone.
At GODSTOW, 'mid the holy band, Old FATHER PETER held command.
And lusty was the pious man, As any of his crafty clan: And rosy was his cheek, and sly The wand'rings of his keen grey eye; Yet all the Farmers wives confest The wond'rous pow'r this Monk possess'd; Pow'r to rub out the score of sin, Which SATAN chalk'd upon his Tally; To give fresh licence to begin,-- And for new scenes of frolic, rally.
For abstinence was not his way-- He lov'd to live --as well as pray ; To prove his gratitude to Heav'n By taking freely all its favors,-- And keeping his account still even, Still mark'd his best endeavours: That is to say, He took pure Ore For benedictions,--and was known, While Reason op'd her golden store,-- Not to unlock his own.
-- And often to his cell went he With the gay Dame of twenty-three: His Cell was sacred, and the fair Well knew, that none could enter there, Who, (such was PETER'S sage decree,) To Paradise ne'er bought a key.
It happen'd that this Farmer's wife (Call MISTRESS TWYFORD--alias BRIDGET,) Led her poor spouse a weary life-- Keeping him, in an endless fidget! Yet ev'ry week she sought the cell Where Holy FATHER PETER stay'd, And there did ev'ry secret tell,-- And there, at Sun-rise, knelt and pray'd.
For near, there liv'd a civil friend, Than FARMER TWYFORD somewhat stouter, And he would oft his counsel lend, And pass the wintry hours away In harmless play; But MISTRESS BRIDGET was so chaste, So much with pious manners grac'd, That none could doubt her! One night, or rather morn, 'tis said The wily neighbour chose to roam, And (FARMER TWYFORD far from home), He thought he might supply his place; And, void of ev'ry spark of grace, Upon HIS pillow, rest his head.
The night was cold, and FATHER PETER, Sent his young neighbour to entreat her, That she would make confession free-- To Him,--his saintly deputy.
Now, so it happen'd, to annoy The merry pair, a little boy The only Son of lovely Bridget, And, like his daddy , giv'n to fidget, Enquir'd who this same neighbour was That took the place his father left-- A most unworthy, shameless theft,-- A sacrilege on marriage laws! The dame was somewhat disconcerted-- For, all that she could say or do,-- The boy his question would renew, Nor from his purpose be diverted.
At length, the matter to decide, "'Tis FATHER PETER" she replied.
"He's come to pray.
" The child gave o'er, When a loud thumping at the door Proclaim'd the Husband coming! Lo! Where could the wily neighbour go? Where hide his recreant, guilty head-- But underneath the Farmer's bed?-- NOW MASTER TWYFORD kiss'd his child; And straight the cunning urchin smil'd : "Hush father ! hush ! 'tis break of day-- "And FATHER PETER'S come to pray! "You must not speak," the infant cries-- "For underneath the bed he lies.
" Now MISTRESS TWYFORD shriek'd, and fainted, And the sly neighbour found, too late, The FARMER, than his wife less sainted, For with his cudgel he repaid-- The kindness of his faithless mate, And fiercely on his blows he laid, 'Till her young lover, vanquish'd, swore He'd play THE CONFESSOR no more ! Tho' fraud is ever sure to find Its scorpion in the guilty mind: Yet, PIOUS FRAUD, the DEVIL'S treasure, Is always paid, in TENFOLD MEASURE.

MARRIAGE AND FEASTS

 ("La salle est magnifique.")

 The hall is gay with limpid lustre bright— 
 The feast to pampered palate gives delight— 
 The sated guests pick at the spicy food, 
 And drink profusely, for the cheer is good; 
 And at that table—where the wise are few— 
 Both sexes and all ages meet the view; 
 The sturdy warrior with a thoughtful face— 
 The am'rous youth, the maid replete with grace, 
 The prattling infant, and the hoary hair 
 Of second childhood's proselytes—are there;— 
 And the most gaudy in that spacious hall, 
 Are e'er the young, or oldest of them all 
 Helmet and banner, ornament and crest, 
 The lion rampant, and the jewelled vest, 
 The silver star that glitters fair and white, 
 The arms that tell of many a nation's might— 
 Heraldic blazonry, ancestral pride, 
 And all mankind invents for pomp beside, 
 The wingèd leopard, and the eagle wild— 
 All these encircle woman, chief and child; 
 Shine on the carpet burying their feet, 
 Adorn the dishes that contain their meat; 
 And hang upon the drapery, which around 
 Falls from the lofty ceiling to the ground, 
 Till on the floor its waving fringe is spread,

 Thus is the banquet ruled by Noise and Light,

 Thus hope of flight were futile from that hall, 
 Where chiefest guest was most enslaved of all! 
 The godlike-making draught that fires the soul

 (Formed of the sexual breath—an idle name, 
 Offspring of Fancy and a nervous frame)— 
 Pleasure, mad daughter of the darksome Night, 
 Whose languid eye flames when is fading light— 
 The gallant chases where a man is borne 
 By stalwart charger, to the sounding horn— 
 The sheeny silk, the bed of leaves of rose, 
 Made more to soothe the sight than court repose; 
 The mighty palaces that raise the sneer 
 Of jealous mendicants and wretches near— 
 The spacious parks, from which horizon blue 
 Arches o'er alabaster statues new; 
 Where Superstition still her walk will take, 
 Unto soft music stealing o'er the lake— 
 The innocent modesty by gems undone— 
 The qualms of judges by small brib'ry won— 
 The dread of children, trembling while they play— 
 The bliss of monarchs, potent in their sway— 
 The note of war struck by the culverin, 
 That snakes its brazen neck through battle din— 
 The military millipede 
 That tramples out the guilty seed— 
 The capital all pleasure and delight— 
 And all that like a town or army chokes 
 The gazer with foul dust or sulphur smokes. 
 The budget, prize for which ten thousand bait 
 A subtle hook, that ever, as they wait 
 Catches a weed, and drags them to their fate, 
 While gleamingly its golden scales still spread— 
 Such were the meats by which these guests were fed. 
 
 A hundred slaves for lazy master cared, 
 And served each one with what was e'er prepared 
 By him, who in a sombre vault below, 
 Peppered the royal pig with peoples' woe, 
 And grimly glad went laboring till late— 
 The morose alchemist we know as Fate! 
 That ev'ry guest might learn to suit his taste, 
 Behind had Conscience, real or mock'ry, placed; 
 Conscience a guide who every evil spies, 
 But royal nurses early pluck out both his eyes! 
 
 Oh! at the table there be all the great, 
 Whose lives are bubbles that best joys inflate! 
 Superb, magnificent of revels—doubt 
 That sagest lose their heads in such a rout! 
 In the long laughter, ceaseless roaming round, 
 Joy, mirth and glee give out a maelström's sound; 
 And the astonished gazer casts his care, 
 Where ev'ry eyeball glistens in the flare. 
 
 But oh! while yet the singing Hebes pour 
 Forgetfulness of those without the door— 
 At very hour when all are most in joy, 
 And the hid orchestra annuls annoy, 
 Woe—woe! with jollity a-top the heights, 
 With further tapers adding to the lights, 
 And gleaming 'tween the curtains on the street, 
 Where poor folks stare—hark to the heavy feet! 
 Some one smites roundly on the gilded grate, 
 Some one below will be admitted straight, 
 Some one, though not invited, who'll not wait! 
 Close not the door! Your orders are vain breath— 
 That stranger enters to be known as Death— 
 Or merely Exile—clothed in alien guise— 
 Death drags away—with his prey Exile flies! 
 
 Death is that sight. He promenades the hall, 
 And casts a gloomy shadow on them all, 
 'Neath which they bend like willows soft, 
 Ere seizing one—the dumbest monarch oft, 
 And bears him to eternal heat and drouth, 
 While still the toothsome morsel's in his mouth.

67. Epistle to John Goldie in Kilmarnock

 O GOWDIE, terror o’ the whigs,
Dread o’ blackcoats and rev’rend wigs!
Sour Bigotry, on her last legs,
 Girns an’ looks back,
Wishing the ten Egyptian plagues
 May seize you quick.
Poor gapin’, glowrin’ Superstition! Wae’s me, she’s in a sad condition: Fye: bring Black Jock, 1 her state physician, To see her water; Alas, there’s ground for great suspicion She’ll ne’er get better.
Enthusiasm’s past redemption, Gane in a gallopin’ consumption: Not a’ her quacks, wi’ a’ their gumption, Can ever mend her; Her feeble pulse gies strong presumption, She’ll soon surrender.
Auld Orthodoxy lang did grapple, For every hole to get a stapple; But now she fetches at the thrapple, An’ fights for breath; Haste, gie her name up in the chapel, 2 Near unto death.
It’s you an’ Taylor 3 are the chief To blame for a’ this black mischief; But, could the L—d’s ain folk get leave, A toom tar barrel An’ twa red peats wad bring relief, And end the quarrel.
For me, my skill’s but very sma’, An’ skill in prose I’ve nane ava’; But quietlins-wise, between us twa, Weel may you speed! And tho’ they sud your sair misca’, Ne’er fash your head.
E’en swinge the dogs, and thresh them sicker! The mair they squeel aye chap the thicker; And still ’mang hands a hearty bicker O’ something stout; It gars an owthor’s pulse beat quicker, And helps his wit.
There’s naething like the honest nappy; Whare’ll ye e’er see men sae happy, Or women sonsie, saft an’ sappy, ’Tween morn and morn, As them wha like to taste the drappie, In glass or horn? I’ve seen me dazed upon a time, I scarce could wink or see a styme; Just ae half-mutchkin does me prime,— Ought less is little— Then back I rattle on the rhyme, As gleg’s a whittle.

Stanzas Written under an Oak in Windsor Forest

 "HERE POPE FIRST SUNG!" O, hallow'd Tree !
Such is the boast thy bark displays;
Thy branches, like thy Patron's lays,
Shall ever, ever, sacred be; 
Nor with'ring storm, nor woodman's stroke, 
Shall harm the POET'S favourite Oak.
'Twas HERE, he woo'd his MUSE of fire, While Inspiration's wond'rous art, Sublimely stealing thro' his heart Did Fancy's proudest themes inspire: 'Twas HERE he wisely learnt to smile At empty praise, and courtly guile.
Retir'd from flatt'ring, specious arts.
From fawning sycophants of state, From knaves, with ravag'd wealth elate, And little SLAVES with TYRANT Hearts; In conscious freedom nobly proud, He scorn'd the envious, grov'ling crowd.
Tho' splendid DOMES around them rise, And pompous TITLES lull to rest Each strugg'ling Virtue in the breast, 'Till POW'R the place of WORTH supplies; The wretched herd can never know The sober joys these haunts bestow.
Does the fond MUSE delight to dwell, Where freezing Penance spreads its shade ? When scarce the Sun's warm beams pervade The hoary HERMIT'S dreary cell? Ah! no­THERE, Superstition blind, With torpid languor chills the mind.
Or, does she seek Life's busy scene, Ah ! no, the sordid, mean, and proud, The little, trifling, flutt'ring crowd, Can never taste her bliss serene; She flies from Fashion's tinsel toys, Nor courts her smile, nor shares her joys.
Nor can the dull pedantic mind, E'er boast her bright creative fires; Above constraint her wing aspires, Nor rigid spells her flight can bind; The narrow track of musty schools, She leaves to plodding VAPID FOOLS.
To scenes like THESE she bends her way, HERE the best feelings of the soul Nor interest taints, nor threats controul, Nor vice allures, nor snares betray; HERE from each trivial hope remov'd, Our BARD first sought the MUSE he lov'd.
Still shall thy pensive gloom diffuse, The verse sublime, the dulcet song; While round the POET'S seat shall throng, Each rapture sacred to the MUSE; Still shall thy verdant branches be The bow'r of wond'rous minstrelsy.

Sonnets 09: Let You Not Say Of Me When I Am Old

 Let you not say of me when I am old,
In pretty worship of my withered hands
Forgetting who I am, and how the sands
Of such a life as mine run red and gold
Even to the ultimate sifting dust, "Behold,
Here walketh passionless age!"—for there expands
A curious superstition in these lands,
And by its leave some weightless tales are told.
