Blinks through Blood-shot Walks

When at five-thirty
In the rubbed-eye haziness
Of ferreting lonesome night walks
The camera-eye refugee
Asleep in the half awakefulness
Of the hour
Peers out of his high turbanned sockets:
Hyde Park's through road links
London's diurnally estranged couple -
The Arch and Gate.
When at five-thirty The foot falls gently Of the vision cut in dark recesses And the man, finger gingerly on the fly Gapes dolefully about For a while Exchanges a casual passing word Standing in the Rembrandtesque clefts And the multipled ma'm'selle trips out: Neat and slick.
They say you meet the girls at parties And get deeper than swine in orgies.
When at five-thirty The fisherman's chilled chips Lie soggy and heeled under the Arch Where patchy transparent wrappers cling To slippery hands jingling the inexact change That mounted the trustful fisherman's credit: The stub legged fisher of diplomat And cool cat And the prostitutes' confidant; Each shivering pimp's warming pan.
Then at five-thirty The bowels of Hyde Park Improperly growled and shunted And shook the half-night-long Lazily swaggering double deckers, Suddenly as in a rude recollection, To break and pull, grind and swing away And around, drawing the knotting air after Curling and unfurling on the pavements.
And at five-thirty The prostrate mindful old refugee Dares not stir Nor cares to wake and swallow The precisely half-downed bottle Of Coke clinging to the pearly dew Nor lick the clasp knife clean Lying bare by a tin of' skewed top Corned beef, incisively culled Look! that garden all spruced up An incongruous lot of hair on that bald pate No soul stirs in there but the foul air No parking alongside but from eight to eight.
Learning so hard and late No time to scratch the bald pate.
At five-thirty-one A minute just gone The thud is on, the sledge-hammer yawns And in the back of ears, strange noises As from afar and a million feet tramp.
One infinitesimal particle knocks another And the whirl begins in a silent rage And the human heart beats harder While in and around, this London This atomic mammoth roams In the wastes of wars and tumbling empires.

Youth and Art

 1 It once might have been, once only:
2 We lodged in a street together,
3 You, a sparrow on the housetop lonely,
4 I, a lone she-bird of his feather.
5 Your trade was with sticks and clay, 6 You thumbed, thrust, patted and polished, 7 Then laughed 'They will see some day 8 Smith made, and Gibson demolished.
' 9 My business was song, song, song; 10 I chirped, cheeped, trilled and twittered, 11 'Kate Brown's on the boards ere long, 12 And Grisi's existence embittered!' 13 I earned no more by a warble 14 Than you by a sketch in plaster; 15 You wanted a piece of marble, 16 I needed a music-master.
17 We studied hard in our styles, 18 Chipped each at a crust like Hindoos, 19 For air looked out on the tiles, 20 For fun watched each other's windows.
21 You lounged, like a boy of the South, 22 Cap and blouse--nay, a bit of beard too; 23 Or you got it, rubbing your mouth 24 With fingers the clay adhered to.

Schizophrenic

 Each morning as I catch my bus,
A-fearing I'll be late,
I think: there are in all of us
Two folks quite separate;
As one I greet the office staff
With grim, official mien;
The other's when I belly-laugh,
And Home Sweet Home's the scene.
I've half a hundred men to boss, And take my job to heart; You'll never find me at a loss, So well I play my part.
My voice is hard, my eye is cold, My mouth is grimly set; They all consider me, I'm told, A "bloody martinet.
" But when I reach my home at night I'm happy as a boy; My kiddies kiss me with delight, And dance a jig of joy.
I slip into my oldest cloths, My lines of care uncrease; I mow the lawn, unhook the hose, And glow with garden peace.
It's then I wonder which I am, the boss with hard-boiled eye, Or just the gay don't care-a-damn Go-lucky garden guy? Am I the starchy front who rants As round his weight he throws, or just old Pop with patchy pants, Who sings and sniffs a rose?

The Super

 When I was with a Shakespeare show
I played the part of Guildenstern,
Or Rosenkrantz - at least I know
It wasn't difficult to learn;
By Reader, do not at me scoff,
For futhermore I should explain
I was the understudy of
The understudy of the Dane.
Oh how it crabbed me just to think They barred me from that role divine; And how I longed to have them drink A cup of slightly poisoned wine! At every night with struts and rants I strove my quid a week to earn, And put my soul in Rosenkrantz - Or was it haply, Guildenstern.
Alas! I might have spared by breath, I never played the noble Dane; And yet when Irving staged Macbeth I bore a tree of Dunsinane, And yearned for that barn-storming day, Of hopes and dreams and patchy pants, When Guildenstern I'd proudly play - Or was, maybe, Rosenkrantz?
