ENTANGLEMENTS

 Why is it that in dreams I have visited -

As teacher or pupil - almost every college and school

In our once so green and pleasant land?

Hardly a subject from art to anthropology I have not

In dream seminar or floating spinning classroom

Studied or tried my prentice hand at, or learned

At the sandalled feet of some guru; as this minute

I returned from an easeled art room with the title

Of my weekly essay, ‘Discuss the links between the work

Of any symbolist poet and Monet.
’ O, how slowly I drifted back to consciousness Probing delightedly the dizzying whitenesses of Mallarm? Strolling along an avenue of linden trees Under a Provencal sky of azure Wet with the scent of jasmine and lavender.
Yet in reality, things could hardly have been more different: Watching our children grow from their first tottering steps, Helping to tend them in sickness, learning the basics Of the healer’s art, taking an old man to a ward, Listening, listening to how many troubled lives And to my own, perhaps; seeking to tease a meaning Or find a thread in the jumbled maze of sorrows Souls in their turbulence and grief have wandered through.
I even wrote a novel, ‘A Gone World’ I called it, And helped another with the birth-pangs of her own.
Trying my hand at translation I puzzled the subtle Metaphors of Reverdy, wandering his midnight landscapes Of windmills and cross-roads where faith meets fate And neither will succumb.
I sat in a packed lecture hall while a Lacanian Misread early Freud through a crooked lens And for a year turned every seminar to war To make him see his vision’s fatal flaw.
I poured over cabinets of case histories, Tried living here and there and met an amah, Teaching her Auden and Empson.
Her tears mingled With my own at our last hurried meeting In a crowded tea room, teaching her Klein.
I sat through many a summer watching the children play, Feeling a hermit’s contentment in his cave, Contemplating Plato and envisioning that cave Of his where shadows move against the wall; And turn to see or fail to see The need to turn at all.

The Hostage

 The tyrant Dionys to seek,
Stern Moerus with his poniard crept;
The watchful guard upon him swept;
The grim king marked his changeless cheek:
"What wouldst thou with thy poniard? Speak!"
"The city from the tyrant free!"
"The death-cross shall thy guerdon be.
" "I am prepared for death, nor pray," Replied that haughty man, "I to live; Enough, if thou one grace wilt give For three brief suns the death delay To wed my sister--leagues away; I boast one friend whose life for mine, If I should fail the cross, is thine.
" The tyrant mused,--and smiled,--and said With gloomy craft, "So let it be; Three days I will vouchsafe to thee.
But mark--if, when the time be sped, Thou fail'st--thy surety dies instead.
His life shall buy thine own release; Thy guilt atoned, my wrath shall cease.
" He sought his friend--"The king's decree Ordains my life the cross upon Shall pay the deed I would have done; Yet grants three days' delay to me, My sister's marriage-rites to see; If thou, the hostage, wilt remain Till I--set free--return again!" His friend embraced--No word he said, But silent to the tyrant strode-- The other went upon his road.
Ere the third sun in heaven was red, The rite was o'er, the sister wed; And back, with anxious heart unquailing, He hastes to hold the pledge unfailing.
Down the great rains unending bore, Down from the hills the torrents rushed, In one broad stream the brooklets gushed.
The wanderer halts beside the shore, The bridge was swept the tides before-- The shattered arches o'er and under Went the tumultuous waves in thunder.
Dismayed he takes his idle stand-- Dismayed, he strays and shouts around; His voice awakes no answering sound.
No boat will leave the sheltering strand, To bear him to the wished-for land; No boatman will Death's pilot be; The wild stream gathers to a sea! "What," cried he, pale with generous fear; "What think to gain ye by the strife? All I bear with me is my life-- I take it to the king!"--and here He snatched the club from him most near: And thrice he smote, and thrice his blows Dealt death--before him fly the foes! The sun is glowing as a brand; And faint before the parching heat, The strength forsakes the feeble feet: "Thou hast saved me from the robbers' hand, Through wild floods given the blessed land; And shall the weak limbs fail me now? Through the green boughs the sun gleams dying, O'er fields that drink the rosy beam, The trees' huge shadows giant seem.
Two strangers on the road are hieing; And as they fleet beside him flying, These muttered words his ear dismay: "Now--now the cross has claimed its prey!" Despair his winged path pursues, The anxious terrors hound him on-- There, reddening in the evening sun, From far, the domes of Syracuse!-- When towards him comes Philostratus (His leal and trusty herdsman he), And to the master bends his knee.
"Back--thou canst aid thy friend no more, The niggard time already flown-- His life is forfeit--save thine own! Hour after hour in hope he bore, Nor might his soul its faith give o'er; Nor could the tyrant's scorn deriding, Steal from that faith one thought confiding!" "Too late! what horror hast thou spoken! Vain life, since it cannot requite him! But death with me can yet unite him; No boast the tyrant's scorn shall make-- How friend to friend can faith forsake.
But from the double death shall know, That truth and love yet live below!" The sun sinks down--the gate's in view, The cross looms dismal on the ground-- The eager crowd gape murmuring round.
His friend is bound the cross unto.

Crowd--guards--all bursts he breathless through: "Me! Doomsman, me!" he shouts, "alone! His life is rescued--lo, mine own!" Amazement seized the circling ring! Linked in each other's arms the pair-- Weeping for joy--yet anguish there! Moist every eye that gazed;--they bring The wondrous tidings to the king-- His breast man's heart at last hath known, And the friends stand before his throne.
Long silent, he, and wondering long, Gazed on the pair--"In peace depart, Victors, ye have subdued my heart! Truth is no dream!--its power is strong.
Give grace to him who owns his wrong! 'Tis mine your suppliant now to be, Ah, let the band of love--be three!"

SONNET XCIV

SONNET XCIV.

Se 'l sasso ond' è più chiusa questa valle.

COULD HE BUT SEE THE HOUSE OF LAURA, HIS SIGHS MIGHT REACH HER MORE QUICKLY.

If, which our valley bars, this wall of stone,
From which its present name we closely trace,
Were by disdainful nature rased, and thrown
Its back to Babel and to Rome its face;
Then had my sighs a better pathway known
To where their hope is yet in life and grace:
They now go singly, yet my voice all own;
And, where I send, not one but finds its place.
There too, as I perceive, such welcome sweet
They ever find, that none returns again,
But still delightedly with her remain.
My grief is from the eyes, each morn to meet—
Not the fair scenes my soul so long'd to see—
Toil for my weary limbs and tears for me.

The Schoolmaster

I

=A Snowy Day in School=

All the slow school hours, round the irregular hum of the class,
Have pressed immeasurable spaces of hoarse silence
Muffling my mind, as snow muffles the sounds that pass
Down the soiled street. We have pattered the lessons ceaselessly--

But the faces of the boys, in the brooding, yellow light
Have shone for me like a crowded constellation of stars,
Like full-blown flowers dimly shaking at the night,
Like floating froth on an ebbing shore in the moon.

Out of each star, dark, strange beams that disquiet:
In the open depths of each flower, dark restless drops:
Twin bubbles, shadow-full of mystery and challenge in the foam's
whispering riot:
--How can I answer the challenge of so many eyes!

The thick snow is crumpled on the roof, it plunges down
Awfully. Must I call back those hundred eyes?--A voice
Wakes from the hum, faltering about a noun--
My question! My God, I must break from this hoarse silence

That rustles beyond the stars to me.--There,
I have startled a hundred eyes, and I must look
Them an answer back. It is more than I can bear.

The snow descends as if the dull sky shook
In flakes of shadow down; and through the gap
Between the ruddy schools sweeps one black rook.

The rough snowball in the playground stands huge and still
With fair flakes settling down on it.--Beyond, the town
Is lost in the shadowed silence the skies distil.

And all things are possessed by silence, and they can brood
Wrapped up in the sky's dim space of hoarse silence
Earnestly--and oh for me this class is a bitter rood.

=The Best of School=

  The blinds are drawn because of the sun,
  And the boys and the room in a colourless gloom
  Of under-water float: bright ripples run
  Across the walls as the blinds are blown
  To let the sunlight in; and I,
  As I sit on the beach of the class alone,
  Watch the boys in their summer blouses,
  As they write, their round heads busily bowed:
  And one after another rouses
  And lifts his face and looks at me,
  And my eyes meet his very quietly,
  Then he turns again to his work, with glee.

  With glee he turns, with a little glad
  Ecstasy of work he turns from me,
  An ecstasy surely sweet to be had.
  And very sweet while the sunlight waves
  In the fresh of the morning, it is to be
  A teacher of these young boys, my slaves
  Only as swallows are slaves to the eaves
  They build upon, as mice are slaves
  To the man who threshes and sows the sheaves.

                  Oh, sweet it is
  To feel the lads' looks light on me,
  Then back in a swift, bright flutter to work,
  As birds who are stealing turn and flee.

  Touch after touch I feel on me
  As their eyes glance at me for the grain
  Of rigour they taste delightedly.

                      And all the class,
  As tendrils reached out yearningly
  Slowly rotate till they touch the tree
  That they cleave unto, that they leap along
  Up to their lives--so they to me.

  So do they cleave and cling to me,
  So I lead them up, so do they twine
  Me up, caress and clothe with free
  Fine foliage of lives this life of mine;
  The lowest stem of this life of mine,
  The old hard stem of my life
  That bears aloft towards rarer skies
  My top of life, that buds on high
  Amid the high wind's enterprise.
  They all do clothe my ungrowing life
  With a rich, a thrilled young clasp of life;
  A clutch of attachment, like parenthood,
  Mounts up to my heart, and I find it good.

And I lift my head upon the troubled tangled world, and though the pain
Of living my life were doubled, I still have this to comfort and
sustain,
I have such swarming sense of lives at the base of me, such sense of
lives
Clustering upon me, reaching up, as each after the other strives
To follow my life aloft to the fine wild air of life and the storm of
thought,
And though I scarcely see the boys, or know that they are there,
distraught
As I am with living my life in earnestness, still progressively and
alone,
Though they cling, forgotten the most part, not companions, scarcely
known
To me--yet still because of the sense of their closeness clinging
densely to me,
And slowly fingering up my stem and following all tinily
The way that I have gone and now am leading, they are dear to me.

  They keep me assured, and when my soul feels lonely,
  All mistrustful of thrusting its shoots where only
  I alone am living, then it keeps
  Me comforted to feel the warmth that creeps
  Up dimly from their striving; it heartens my strife:
  And when my heart is chill with loneliness,
  Then comforts it the creeping tenderness
  Of all the strays of life that climb my life.


III

=Afternoon in School=

THE LAST LESSON

When will the bell ring, and end this weariness?
How long have they tugged the leash, and strained apart
My pack of unruly hounds: I cannot start
Them again on a quarry of knowledge they hate to hunt,
I can haul them and urge them no more.
No more can I endure to bear the brunt
Of the books that lie out on the desks: a full three score
Of several insults of blotted page and scrawl
Of slovenly work that they have offered me.
I am sick, and tired more than any thrall
Upon the woodstacks working weariedly.

                                And shall I take
The last dear fuel and heap it on my soul
Till I rouse my will like a fire to consume
Their dross of indifference, and burn the scroll
Of their insults in punishment?--I will not!
I will not waste myself to embers for them,
Not all for them shall the fires of my life be hot,
For myself a heap of ashes of weariness, till sleep
Shall have raked the embers clear: I will keep
Some of my strength for myself, for if I should sell
It all for them, I should hate them--
            --I will sit and wait for the bell.
