The Dream Of Wearing Shorts Forever

 To go home and wear shorts forever
in the enormous paddocks, in that warm climate,
adding a sweater when winter soaks the grass, 

to camp out along the river bends
for good, wearing shorts, with a pocketknife,
a fishing line and matches, 

or there where the hills are all down, below the plain,
to sit around in shorts at evening
on the plank verandah - 

If the cardinal points of costume
are Robes, Tat, Rig and Scunge,
where are shorts in this compass? 

They are never Robes
as other bareleg outfits have been:
the toga, the kilt, the lava-lava
the Mahatma's cotton dhoti; 

archbishops and field marshals
at their ceremonies never wear shorts.
The very word means underpants in North America.
Shorts can be Tat, Land-Rovering bush-environmental tat, socio-political ripped-and-metal-stapled tat, solidarity-with-the-Third World tat tvam asi, likewise track-and-field shorts worn to parties and the further humid, modelling negligee of the Kingdom of Flaunt, that unchallenged aristocracy.
More plainly climatic, shorts are farmers' rig, leathery with salt and bonemeal; are sailors' and branch bankers' rig, the crisp golfing style of our youngest male National Costume.
Most loosely, they are Scunge, ancient Bengal bloomers or moth-eaten hot pants worn with a former shirt, feet, beach sand, hair and a paucity of signals.
Scunge, which is real negligee housework in a swimsuit, pyjamas worn all day, is holiday, is freedom from ambition.
Scunge makes you invisible to the world and yourself.
The entropy of costume, scunge can get you conquered by more vigorous cultures and help you notice it less.
To be or to become is a serious question posed by a work-shorts counter with its pressed stack, bulk khaki and blue, reading Yakka or King Gee, crisp with steely warehouse odour.
Satisfied ambition, defeat, true unconcern, the wish and the knack of self-forgetfulness all fall within the scunge ambit wearing board shorts of similar; it is a kind of weightlessness.
Unlike public nakedness, which in Westerners is deeply circumstantial, relaxed as exam time, artless and equal as the corsetry of a hussar regiment, shorts and their plain like are an angelic nudity, spirituality with pockets! A double updraft as you drop from branch to pool! Ideal for getting served last in shops of the temperate zone they are also ideal for going home, into space, into time, to farm the mind's Sabine acres for product and subsistence.
Now that everyone who yearned to wear long pants has essentially achieved them, long pants, which have themselves been underwear repeatedly, and underground more than once, it is time perhaps to cherish the culture of shorts, to moderate grim vigour with the knobble of bare knees, to cool bareknuckle feet in inland water, slapping flies with a book on solar wind or a patient bare hand, beneath the cadjiput trees, to be walking meditatively among green timber, through the grassy forest towards a calm sea and looking across to more of that great island and the further tropics.

The Other Tiger

 A tiger comes to mind.
The twilight here Exalts the vast and busy Library And seems to set the bookshelves back in gloom; Innocent, ruthless, bloodstained, sleek It wanders through its forest and its day Printing a track along the muddy banks Of sluggish streams whose names it does not know (In its world there are no names or past Or time to come, only the vivid now) And makes its way across wild distances Sniffing the braided labyrinth of smells And in the wind picking the smell of dawn And tantalizing scent of grazing deer; Among the bamboo's slanting stripes I glimpse The tiger's stripes and sense the bony frame Under the splendid, quivering cover of skin.
Curving oceans and the planet's wastes keep us Apart in vain; from here in a house far off In South America I dream of you, Track you, O tiger of the Ganges' banks.
It strikes me now as evening fills my soul That the tiger addressed in my poem Is a shadowy beast, a tiger of symbols And scraps picked up at random out of books, A string of labored tropes that have no life, And not the fated tiger, the deadly jewel That under sun or stars or changing moon Goes on in Bengal or Sumatra fulfilling Its rounds of love and indolence and death.
To the tiger of symbols I hold opposed The one that's real, the one whose blood runs hot As it cuts down a herd of buffaloes, And that today, this August third, nineteen Fifty-nine, throws its shadow on the grass; But by the act of giving it a name, By trying to fix the limits of its world, It becomes a fiction not a living beast, Not a tiger out roaming the wilds of earth.
We'll hunt for a third tiger now, but like The others this one too will be a form Of what I dream, a structure of words, and not The flesh and one tiger that beyond all myths Paces the earth.
I know these things quite well, Yet nonetheless some force keeps driving me In this vague, unreasonable, and ancient quest, And I go on pursuing through the hours Another tiger, the beast not found in verse.

The Saddhu Of Couva

 When sunset, a brass gong,
vibrate through Couva,
is then I see my soul, swiftly unsheathed,
like a white cattle bird growing more small
over the ocean of the evening canes,
and I sit quiet, waiting for it to return
like a hog-cattle blistered with mud,
because, for my spirit, India is too far.
And to that gong sometimes bald clouds in saffron robes assemble sacred to the evening, sacred even to Ramlochan, singing Indian hits from his jute hammock while evening strokes the flanks and silver horns of his maroon taxi, as the mosquitoes whine their evening mantras, my friend Anopheles, on the sitar, and the fireflies making every dusk Divali.
I knot my head with a cloud, my white mustache bristle like horns, my hands are brittle as the pages of Ramayana.
Once the sacred monkeys multiplied like branches in the ancient temples: I did not miss them, because these fields sang of Bengal, behind Ramlochan Repairs there was Uttar Pradesh; but time roars in my ears like a river, old age is a conflagration as fierce as the cane fires of crop time.
I will pass through these people like a cloud, they will see a white bird beating the evening sea of the canes behind Couva, and who will point it as my soul unsheathed? Naither the bridegroom in beads, nor the bride in her veils, their sacred language on the cinema hoardings.
I talked too damn much on the Couva Village Council.
I talked too softly, I was always drowned by the loudspeakers in front of the stores or the loudspeakers with the greatest pictures.
I am best suited to stalk like a white cattle bird on legs like sticks, with sticking to the Path between the canes on a district road at dusk.
Playing the Elder.

Kitcheners School

 1898

Being a translation of the song that was made by a Mohammedanschoolmaster of Bengal Infantry (some time on service at Suakim)when he heard that Kitchener was taking money from the English tobuild a Madrissa for Hubshees -- or a college for the Sudanese.
Oh Hubshee, carry your shoes in your hand and bow your head on your breast! This is the message of Kitchener who did not break you in jest.
It was permitted to him to fulfil the long-appointed years; Reaching the end ordained of old over your dead Emirs.
He stamped only before your walls, and the Tomb ye knew was dust: He gathered up under his armpits all the swords of your trust: He set a guard on your granaries, securing the weak from the strong: He said: -- " Go work the waterwheels that were abolished so long.
" He said: -- "Go safely, being abased.
I have accomplished my vow.
" That was the mercy of Kitchener.
Cometh his madness now! He does not desire as ye desire, nor devise as ye devise: He is preparing a second host -- an army to make you wise.
Not at the mouth of his clean-lipped guns shall ye learn his name again, But letter by letter, from Kaf to Kaf, at the mouths of his chosen men.
He has gone back to his own city, not seeking presents or bribes, But openly asking the English for money to buy you Hakims and scribes.
Knowing that ye are forfeit by battle and have no right to live, He begs for money to bring you learning -- and all the English give.
It is their treasure -- it is their pleasure -- thus are their hearts inclined: For Allah created the English mad -- the maddest of all mankind! They do not consider the Meaning ofThings; they consult not creed nor clan.
Behold, they clap the slave on the back, and behold, he ariseth a man! They terribly carpet the earth with dead, and before their cannon cool, They walk unarmed by twos and threes to call the living to school.
How is this reason (which is their reason) to judge a scholar's worth, By casting a ball at three straight sticks and defending the same with a fourth? But this they do (which is doubtless a spell) and other matters more strange, Until, by the operation of years, the hearts of their scholars change: Till these make come and go great boats or engines upon the rail (But always the English watch near by to prop them when they fail); Till these make laws of their own choice and Judges of their And all the mad English obey the Judges and say that that Law is good.
Certainly they were mad from of old; but I think one new thing, That the magic whereby they work their magic -- wherefrom their fortunes spring -- May be that they show all peoples their magic and ask no price in return.
Wherefore, since ye are bond to that magic, O Hubshee, make haste and learn! Certainly also is Kitchener mad.
But one sure thing I know -- If he who broke you be minded to teach you, to his Madrissa go! Go, and carry your shoes in your hand and bow your head on your breast, For he who did not slay you in sport, he will not teach you in jest.

The Rupaiyat of Omar Kalvin

 Now the New Year, reviving last Year's Debt,

For if I sinned and fell, where lies the Gain Of Knowledge? Would it ease you of your Pain To know the tangled Threads of Revenue, I ravel deeper in a hopeless Skein? The Burning of the Ship Kent

 Good people of high and low degree,
I pray ye all to list to me,
And I'll relate a harrowing tale of the sea
Concerning the burning of the ship "Kent" in the Bay of Biscay,
Which is the most appalling tale of the present century.
She carried a crew, including officers, of 148 men, And twenty lady passengers along with them; Besides 344 men of the 31st Regiment, And twenty officers with them, all seemingly content.
Also fhe soldiers' wives, which numbered forty-three, And sixty-six children, a most beautiful sight to see; And in the year of 1825, and on the 19th of February, The ship "Kent" sailed from the Downs right speedily, While the passengers' hearts felt light with glee.
And the beautiful ship proceeded on her way to Bengal, While the passengers were cheerful one and all; And the sun shone out in brilliant array, And on the evening of the 28th they entered the Bay of Biscay.
But a gale from the south-west sprang up that night, Which filled the passengers' hearts with fright; And it continued to increase in violence as the night wore on, Whilst the lady passengers looked very woe-begone.
Part of the cargo in the hold consisted of shot and shell, And the vessel rolled heavily as the big billows rose and fell; Then two sailors descended the forehold carrying a light, To see if all below was safe and right.
And they discovered a spirit cask and the contents oozing rapidly, And the man with the light stooped to examine it immediately; And in doing so he dropped fhe lamp while in a state of amaze, And, oh horror! in a minute the forehold was in a blaze.
It was two o'clock in the morning when the accident took place, And, alas! horror and fear was depicted in each face; And the sailors tried hard to extinguish the flame, But, oh Heaven! all their exertions proved in vain.
The inflammable matter rendered their efforts of no avail, And the brave sailors with over-exertion looked very pale; And for hours in the darkness they tried to check the fire, But the flames still mounted higher and higher.
But Captain Cobb resolved on a last desperate experiment, Because he saw the ship was doomed, and he felt discontent; Then he raised the alarm that the ship was on fire, Then the paesengers quickly from their beds did retire.
And women and children rushed to the deck in wild despair, And, paralyeed with terror, many women tore theu hair; And some prayed to God for help, and wildly did screech, But, alas! poor souls, help was not within their reach.
Still the gale blew hard, and the waves ran mountains high, While men, women, and children bitterly did cry To God to save them from the merciless fire; But the flames rose higher and higher.
And when the passengers had lost all hope, and in great dismay, The look-out man shouted, "Ho! a sail coming this way"; Then every heart felt light and gay, And signals of distress were hoisted without delay.
Then the vessel came to their rescue, commanded by Captain Cook, And he gazed upon the burning ship with a pitiful look; She proved to be the brig "Cambria," bound for Vera Cruz, Then the captain cried, "Men, save all ye can, there's no time to lose.
" Then the sailors of the "Cambria" wrought with might and main, While the sea spray fell on them like heavy rain; First the women and children were transferred from the "Kent" By boats, ropes, and tackle without a single accident.
But, alas! the fire had reached the powder magszine, Then followed an explosion, oh! what a fesrful scene; But the exploslon was witnessed by Captain Babby of the ship "Carline," Who most fortunately arrived in the nick of time.
And fourteen additional human beings were saved from the "Kent," And they thanked Captain Babby and God, who to them succour sent, And had saved them from being burnt, and drowned in the briny deep; And they felt so overjoyed that some of them did weep; And in the first port in England they landed without delay, And when their feet touched English soil their hearts felt gay.

Lovers Gifts XXII: I Shall Gladly Suffer

 I shall gladly suffer the pride of culture to die out in my house,
if only in some happy future I am born a herd-boy in the Brinda
forest.
The herd-boy who grazes his cattle sitting under the banyan tree, and idly weaves gunja flowers into garlands, who loves to splash and plunge in the Jamuna's cool deep stream.
He calls his companions to wake up when morning dawns, and all the houses in the lane hum with the sound of the churn, clouds of dust are raised by the cattle, the maidens come out in the courtyard to milk the king.
As the shadows deepen under the tomal trees, and the dusk gathers on the river-banks; when the milkmaids, while crossing the turbulent water, tremble with fear; and loud peacocks, with tails outspread, dance in the forest, he watchers the summer clouds.
When the April night is sweet as a fresh-blown flower, he disappears in the forest with a peacock's plume in his hair; the swing ropes are twined with flowers on the branches; the south wind throbs with music, and the merry shepherd boys crowd on the banks of the blue river.
No, I will never be the leader, brothers, of this new age of new Bengal; I shall not trouble to light the lamp of culture for the benighted.
If only I could be born, under the shady asoka groves, in some village of Brinda, where milk is churned by the maidens!
