A paeon is a metrical foot of four syllables with one heavy or stressed syllable and three lighter or unstressed syllables. In classical prosody, the stressed syllable can fall in any of the four positions, producing first through fourth paeons. The term is most often used in discussion of Greek and Latin meter, though it may also appear in analysis of accentual verse.
