In today’s world with wars raging and other disturbing events one would tend to gravitate towards poetry as balm for the soul. Do we search by topic or do we habitually turn to our favourite poets to lift our spirits? Even nature, the trusty theme to sooth wreck havoc, and at times can be a contest.

In the following Suzette Prime poem I recorded the battle over the possession of an earthworm.
THE SMELL OF THE SEA
the smell of the sea
is overpowered by the
watermelon fragrance of newly mowed lawn
wagtails
hunting for unseen tit-bits
amongst shrubs
an earthworm becomes a bone of contention
a butcherbird swoops
swallowing the spoil
if only the wagtails had agreed to share
there’s enough for all
to have gone around

Conclusion
However small our contribution, it should be an honour and a privilege, the responsibility not to be taken lightly, to have a positive impact on our environment and an uplifting influence on those whose lives we touch through our poetry.
