Stages of Poetry Writing and Poet's thinking Process

by Alemseged Sisay

What is poetry?

Poetry is a means of transferring ideas of others or your own through structured words to convey emotions of yourself or others on written media or orally . emotions are inner senses which can be call to mind to be ousted out of the mind in written or orally expression, your basic need may or may not be to tell to others how you feel for the desired sense that struggled to be told out, you may write poem to read for yourself after thinking for it, or you may recite it to have some rhythmic sense of tone to have delight alone with your verses. That is why many poets are not known or seen as popular to the public albeit they wrote more than ten thousands of poems on their memory book or on their mobile apparatus, they need to have rest and with that rest they ponder to have glee and to get that glee they versify their sense and make it a poem, the next stage is to threw it to trash or to retain it in their poetry database.

Stages of Writing a Poem

There are Six  stages of writing a poem, sense arousal, determination, pondering, choosing styles, writing, and reading your own poem by and by to have joy with your poem.

1. Sense arousal

There are many reasons which stimulate a poet’s organs to write poems. Sadness, solitude, love, heartbreaks, victory, reminiscent, nostalgias, and etc…; are intrinsic and extrinsic emotions of sense arousal which oblige you to instigate writing your thought out, or speaking your thought out.  There are two poetic emotions arousal memories to make you joined in writing mood. These poetic emotion arousals are intrinsic emotions and extrinsic emotions. Intrinsic emotions are emotion which you used from your inner stimuli to write your poem. These inner stimuli can be your love, sadness, betrayal experience, your sense at victory, hate ….and more. The other sense arousal poetic emotion is extrinsic emotions, these emotions are factors which lead you to write poem not by your interest but by others demand. By others demand you can determine to write poems, for example you may need to write poem impressed by contest idea to win medal, you may be asked by a musician to write a lyric poem for his new album, you may write a poem asked by some ones’ funeral to be read, these all are extrinsic poetic sense arousals to write poetry.

2. Determination

The second step of poem writing is a determination. This step needs your strength of mind whether you are capable to write the poem or not. In this step you need to make sure that whether you have the desired prowess and abilities to write the poem that you asked in the sense arousal step of emotion stimulation. Determination is a two opt process of writing in this context, write or not write decision. If you determine to write, you start to think how to write.

3. Pondering

Pondering is the third process or step of writing a poem cognitive activity by using mental capacity to complete and understand functions of your poetic writing goalWhat are the 6 stages of thinking?

Poets  develop critical thinking skills at different paces, but always through the following developmental stages of poet’s brain that begins from  unreflective thinker to challenged thinker then beginning thinker to practicing thinker and advanced thinker eventual matured poet’s as they supposed to be master thinkers. These developmental stages of poet’s brain

Can be related and defined based on the psychologist Jean Piaget’s four major stages of cognitive development as he called them sensorimotor intelligence, preoperational thinking, concrete operational thinking, and  formal operational thinking

3.1- The sensorimotor intelligence of poets thinking is knowledge that is obtained from sensory perception and motor actions involving objects in the environment. This form of cognition characterizes poets to draw pictures and imageries in their mind about the environment of their thought how to construct it by using their sensory motors; they get the knowledge from one's sensory and motor interactions with objects. They try like a child to grasp the spectrum of the morning ray on their hands, to kiss the night moon, to touch the sky in their mind. As this stage of thinking poets are like babies who need to put themselves on the ember of the fire just for the alluring crimson beauty of the flamboyant dangerous fire. Then they convert its meaning to love in their mind after remembering how love burns people in its different stages.

3.2- The next stage of poets thinking is preoperational thinking of poet’s like children build on object permanence and continue to develop abstract mental processes. This means they can think about things beyond the physical world, such as things that happened in the past and starts personifying objects build simile to catch their sense more.

3.3- The third thinking stage of poets is concrete operational thinking. In this stage poets write their poem by putting solution to each raised emotional questions by poetic logical operations. This poetic logical operations are their need of conservation from the coldness of solitude, their desire of reversibility to the former potency by courage, their classification of different opinions and how they dealt on it by allowing themselves to logical reasoning of good learning on pros and cons, by and by how to reach at their final stanza from each lines and stanzas premises to conclusions.

3.4- The final stage of poets thinking to write a poem is formal operational thinking. At this stage they have the ability to formulate hypotheses in their constructed beginning lines and systematically test them at their middle lines of each stanza to arrive at an answer to emotions at the end of their stanzas and or poem lines. Poets in the formal operational stage are also able to think abstractly, and to understand to learn and write with different poetic forms or structure, even by building  a mathematical problem.

Here is a good example tag quest style poem to show a poet who reached at the final stage of thinking in the poem writing process.

Farmers Discourse [TagQuestStanza]

The kind azure is blue now; animals have no water in their burrowing
Falcons are flying; I am hearing they are crowing
Seems bad lack of seasons
Isn’t it?, the kind azure?

The promised rainbow has disappeared longer
Grief, death, suffers and hunger
Has killed softly citizens
Isn’t it, the promised rainbow?

The mother land is dry, of the summer
The spring and the winter
The autumn flowers, too
Isn’t it, the mother land?

We are sinners, so God is in wrath
Protected rivers not water to hath
Swallowed springs in the mountains
Aren’t we, Sinners?

We have Nothing grains  in barns
Fogs are escaped from tarns
Holding the rain faraway
Haven't we, nothing grains?

Dear pitiful God Show us your pity
Our homes are empty
Pardon our sins for your compassion
Don’t you, dear Pitiful God?

And another example with Arithmetic Poetry a master thinker can build a poem like this :

An arithmetic poem a+b= c style by Pavithra Selvaraj

Like fresh dew drops ( a+b=c)

Like fresh dew drops
tears flow continuously
erasing the rosy blush on her cheek

4. Choosing styles

The fourth stage of writing a poem is choosing a poetry style. In this stage a poet can choose any poetry style which can suit with his emotion. This stage is more with the poets’ prior knowledge and skill on poetry styles. More experienced and high thinker poets know more than 100 poetry styles, even more of 1260 poetry styles like the Indian poet PK ROY as he done his research on 1260 poetry styles. From the simplest free verse unto complex sonnets a poet can choose the best style to write with it his or her poem. And as Shakespeare chose a 14 liner sonnet to his love poems we can choose the best one. The most popular easy forms are free verses, couplets, tercets and quatrains to build stanzas but there are many traditional and contemporary forms of poetry to convey our thoughts and emotion through it.

5-  Writting ( Verse Making)

The fifth stage is writing your poem with your poetic ability. You can use here after selecting your styles one or more poetic devices in your poems. These poetic devices are poetic elements which can give flavor to your poem much and more. We will see in detail in this book what a poetic device is and which poetic devices are known as a flavor of a poem.

6- Reading Your Poem

The final stage of writing poem is a reading stage of your own poem. This stage is an evaluation stage of your emotion by reading it alone. The final product of poetry writing is a poem. Here is a final product of poetry writing given to you as an example.

The lasso of cow boys

Cowboy how a brave you were perforce
to catch cattle galloping on a horse
throwing the lasso at the neck of your hunt
surrendering the potent as you want
cowboy
