The Water of Life

O to bathe in some clear, crystal water
That would wash me as white as the snow!
Every blemish, disease, and disorder,
In its pureness would all have to go.

I would learn to relax in its stillness;
To its movements I'd learn to give in.
In its flow would be perfect contentment,
Far removed from commotion and din.

I would dive in its depths without danger,
I would sink in all safety below,
Then I'd rise to the surface rejoicing,
Such a freedom from fear I would know.

I would lie in that clear, crystal water,
Let its peace my anxieties still.
What a sweetness of life and of beauty,
If at last I'd abandon self-will.

Is there yet such a life-giving water?
Such an ocean or river for me?
Such a stream, or a lake, or a fountain,
That's sufficient my soul to set free?

Oh, I'd plunge in such water,
I'd race to its shore,
I'd wash in its waves
Till my sins were no more!

I'd leap in its billows,
I'd swim in its swell,
My fears in its flood
Would so sweetly dispel!

Is there yet such a river?
Is there yet such a sea?
Is there yet such a life-giving water
For me?

“He showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb.” Revelation 22:1 NKJV
