What Am I Doing Here

The journey he began long years ago
A game with purpose fired in mind and soul
Each deal of cards, with fortune’s dice each throw
Brought him a step more near to this, his goal

The duels were fought with cunning and with skill
No quarter given those who would oppose
A silver tongue employed, curled to his will
Swayed power, brought his long striving t’ward its close

Then winning line was passed in jubilation
When accolades of praise were his to own
He occupied that role that rules the nation
Now sad and tragic shell upon a throne

Conveyed in feeble cry of mind unclear
Pathetic words: ‘What am I doing here?’
