Mary's Ordeal

Born in Oklahoma back woods
Three children , each a year apart
Jill, Jim, and Joe were their names
Raised by Mary, bless her heart

Life wasn't easy for Mary
Living in a one room shack
Using an old well for water,
With a rickety outhouse out back!

Last year their papa disappeared
(With a young girl, is what they say)
Mary was forced to take welfare
To help feed her kids each day

She always made her own bread
She'd sell it too, if time would let
Saying, "Makin' bread is my job!"
Something she'd live to regret!

When going to worship each Sunday
To avoid a straggler search,
She'd tie them wrist to wrist with yarn
Then walk up the path to the church

This time Joe forgot his best toy
A Peter Rabbit stuffed with hair
So he yelled out, "I want Peter!"
Mary rolled her eyes in despair!

This Sunday was vocational day
What each parent did was said
"Mama's in retail", "Dad is in stocks"
Jim said, "My mama, is in bread!"

Jill dropped a hymnal, Jim wet his pants
Joe put gum in Mary,s hair
Where he got it she didn't know
And frankly she just didn't care!

Later, most shook hands with the pastor
But Jill, stood pouting with a frown
"I don't want to be tied up",she said
Mary pulled them out with her head down!

The then, tethered trio waddled off
Mary of course always the leader
In the distance all heard a faint shout
It was Joe yelling, "I want Peter!"
