Christmas Overseas

Sand-covered, dusty boots

Iraq, Kuwait, and more

it is this time of year

that makes the heart feel sore.

Distant dreams in your head

Wishing for a quiet night

Getting letters from home

to make it seem all right.

Decorating a small space,

trying to make it feel like home

Pictures around a makeshift tree

to never feel all alone.

Meals on a paper plate,

It just does not feel the same

but I am still here holding on

I choose not to complain.

One brief call or Skype,

to see and hear the ones I love

and wish them a Merry Christmas

since you are too far for me to hug.

I pray for others' safety,

more than I pray for my own

because just like me

They are also missing home.

But I am here for my Country,

something I am proud to do

This time of year

always makes me blue.

So, I do what I can,

to make the time pass by

I have a lot to protect

and I have no time to cry.

I love my Country very much,

and I love my family too

I would give up my heart and life

to them, I will be true.

Though I am here far from home,

Just know that I am okay

and I am protecting you and more

on this winter holiday.
