A Fan

The darkness fades to grey and the first bird stirs

The fan spins relentlessly and the man wakes

Listens

Wishes for an answer as the birds speak of the wonder of a new day

He lights his cigarette and the smoke curls

Like the fan his mind spins

He tries to capture a thought but it has moved on

He draws on the cigarette listening to the dawn

Wishes for coffee and embraces the melody

The crow has woke and caws for something

The emptiness won't leave nor the birds

He decides to make his way to the coffee

The aches of sleep and age slowly depart but the spinning keeps

When will his mind stop its uneasy endless wandering

Will two plus two always be four or someday become five

Will He remember what He just wrote in a minute

In a minute will He remember

Will you love Him when he forgets your name
