Notes About The Poem

I lived a very exciting and adventurous teenage life...and I wouldn't trade it in for anything.

The Westbury Sweetshop Woods

The time was between the years of 1972 or 1976 when I was thirteen to about sixteen years old. The place was "The woods behind the Westbury Sweetshop" In the town of Iselin, New Jersey, where I grew up. That's where I spent many of my teenage years. My friends and I started hanging out there when I was thirteen when my buddies and I wanted to play army. We would build forts and tree houses there and Capture one another and keep them imprisoned for hours (lol). At age fourteen, I bought a bow and arrow set from my neighbor and me and one of my best friends would hunt for rabbits and squirrels and we became very good as marksmen with them. One afternoon we each shot a rabbit with our bows and as we were walking through the woods with them in our hands, we came across a hobo from Toledo, Ohio. He scared the hell out of us as he stopped us in our tracks. We talked to him because we pretty much were stuck out in the woods with him and if he really wanted to, he could easily have done something to us. Thank God he was just a passerby who turned out to be a harmless and hungry old man. We actually ended up giving up one of our rabbits so that he could eat it. That guys face still sticks in my head after all these years later. When I was fifteen, my brother owned a mini-bike, and we rode it all through them woods. We made permanent trails that zigzagged all over the place. Many times, we would get chased by the police, but we always managed to lose them in the dust. At age sixteen my friends and I started drinking, we drank Boones Farm Strawberry Hill Wine (the first taste of alcohol I ever had, I ended up puking my guts out and I never drank it again-lol) and beer and smoked pot under the bridge where the train tracks were. That was a common place to hang out as many of the kids from our town would go to drink and party. Yep, those good old woods behind the Westbury sweetshop brings me back to some great times. Sadly, now they have built apartments and stores there and all that is left are our childhood memories.

sadly, it's all gone

Love this one Charles. It brought back memories for me in those years and it is so funny because although we didn't kill rabbits we used a bow and arrow for target practice and we had a rupp mini bike we had so much fun with. Your experiences were like the one's we had. Those were the days my friend how quickly we grew up and looking back those were the best years of our lives.. A favorite for making me remember my friends and my parents during those years and the fun we had...

Hello Charles, your story transported me straight into those woods—the forts, the rabbit hunts, and even the hobo’s haunting face. It’s bittersweet how places fade, but memories like yours keep them alive. I grew up on a farm and enjoyed those same things Beautifully told. Winter Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel

Long ago, and in an entirely different time, I could relate - but nowadays, find the thought of Boone's Farm almost nauseating. Love your tales and remember so well similar times - I was born in 65, so wasn't to far behind you. God bless you always. love, Gina

Good memories here Charlie. I graduated from HS in 1970 so I got to grow up in the era. It was a golden age no doubt about it. Well said

Happy memories Charlie, those 60s and 70s were the best years, seems to have gone down hill since then. Your verse reminded me of Stand By Me. An enjoyable read. Tom

Lasaad, so nice to see you, my friend. Thank you for your wonderful comments. Iselin, where I grew up is now a very well-known place to the many people of India. If you are ever in New Jersey, I would suggest a visit there as there are many fine Indian cuisines and shops to explore. I still live only a few miles away from there and my brother still resides there.

Ah yes, I remember it well. Nothing like growing up in the 60's and 70's. A fun nostalgic read, Charles.

Very readable piece of nostalgia Charles. I had similar experiences at about the same age. Drinking 3.2 beer at fifteen, playing with the girlies, smoking funny things in the woods and yes, I was a puker too. Never could hold my alcohol lol. Drove my parents half crazy but that was 70's teen life

Those were great times, Tom. I am sure there are many like you and me. Hey, at that age 2 beers were enough to make us puke (lol). Just happy we were one of the lucky ones to have come out of it okay! Thanks for always being supportive of my posts, much appreciated my friend!
