Notes About The Poem

Written 24th January 2025

Step the Road Jack

A young man would strut round the office block Thinking he was god's gift, come from fine stock But his hip wiggle Made the girls giggle If only he'd known how the staff would mock. Plainly seeking some office romances But the fool of a man spoilt his chances At an office do He was stuck like glue To the boss's wife, making wild advances. There and then the idiot got the sack Ordered to buzz off and step the road Jack He went in a huff Forgetting to strut When told to send his last pay packet back.

Beryl, an interesting story indeed! There's probably a good reason to avoid an office romance, and this is but one fine example. It's hard to know what would help a person like this. I think he needed a friend who could be honest with him. Of course, pride makes correction difficult. There's indeed a lot here to think about! Cheers and smiles!

Dear Duke, I saw a few office romances over the years, this stayed in mind because of the way the person concerned would strut about, as if he was the the looking male there’d ever been…Thank you Beryl

Dear Beryl, Your beautiful poem delves playfully into the issue of hubris and the repercussions of overconfidence. It illustrates a young man's misplaced self-assurance and attempts to seek love and attention in the workplace, which eventually lead to his collapse. I've always enjoyed reading your poetry.

Thank you Sotto, this is a blast from the past, a distant memory of someone like that, though a bit of fantasy too. I enjoy your style of poetry also, very much so… Beryl
