Slipped Away

Sandra Hall was a college student, like experience gained from learning, Living in the house of her parents; with love like red, fall leaves returning. Sandra was in her final year of school, and she had a network of friends, Like the grape, starry nights of luxury, that pink, velvet moon portends. Other family didn't live very far, in warm days of color and forget me nots, Often playing with their frisky feline, against summer's mosaic backdrop. She and her fellow classmates had thesises, on many different life topics. Hers involved the long term effects of deforestation, in the foliate tropics. Pearl necklaces caught moonbeams, on the nectarine nights of neighbors; Calling with nut pies and wistful nostalgia, so much better than strangers. 'Spiral cacti' were twirling, joyous; while 'string of hearts' plants loved life; When 'begonia maculata' wore white polka dots, in a summer, lush and rife. Blistered massonia awaited a remedy, while 'lifesaver' plants saved others; And 'hottentot bread' plants fed the hungry, like sunbeams, shadow covers. Sandra went out on blue lake one day, with her best friend, Daisy Spencer, After working on her thesis, and a picnic. They fell asleep in rolling splendor! As Sandra and Daisy dreamed summer, the canoe slowly drifted in current, They waked far from where they'd started, like glittery memory, so urgent! Things had started out so perfect, up 'til the moment they had slipped away; Yet, a healthy meal and contentment, can make someone drowsy, any day. Having already glided so far in afternoon, with comparable miles to return, They rowed back to their site, wide awake. Like the moon as sunrise burns. But, squirrels had plundered Sandra's bag, and seized pages of her thesis; To nest in naked treetops come winter. Like a beautiful scene, out of focus. Sandra gazed on the chaos, despairing, like when gold sun first saw rain; But, recalling the positivity of her dream, reconstructed those pages again! The rewrite had the original's essence, although it was not word for word; Like berry day's sudden sigh in starlight, to olden songs of a mockingbird. Where would we be without dreams? They relax, energize and inspire us. Sandra did well and graduated, like the beckoning stars-a diamond crush! 'Row, row, row your boat, Gently down the stream. Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, Life is but a dream.'

Dear Evelyn, i love how you have narrated this awesome poem in rich descriptive narrative that intertwines nature’s beauty with Sandra’s journey of resilience and creativity. With imagery and metaphors highlighting the uncertainties of life, where challenges like the loss of her thesis are met with determination and inspiration drawn from dreams. Its closing lines cleverly tie the story’s themes of renewal and perseverance to the universal wisdom of life’s transient, dreamlike nature. Stay creative. ^__^ JCB

I like how your poem poem captures the journey of Sandra Hall—a college student navigating both the excitement and challenges of academic life—with a gentle and optimistic tone. Through vivid imagery and metaphor, the poem explores themes of growth, resilience, and the importance of dreams in overcoming obstacles. The squirrels stealing her thesis serves as a striking symbol of life's unexpected disruptions, yet Sandra’s ability to reconstruct her work highlights the power of perseverance.

Dear evelyn, your way with storytelling always is so artistic with so many descriptive lines painting imagery in such a picturesque manner! I absolutely love the flow and kept me hooked from the start. Andi love the nursery rhyme that youv chosen to do here too. I especially love the lines “Sandra gazed on the chaos, despairing, like when gold sun first saw rain; But, recalling the positivity of her dream, reconstructed those pages again!” So moving and heartfelt. The ending is brilliant. Made me question too, where will we be without dreams. Pleasure reading! A fave this is. Sending you light alwahs

Poor Evelyn. To have squirrels eat her thesis. But you are clever and will rewrite all. I will not miss this lovely Saturday poem.
