Written for Remembrance Day 2024
May poppies grow, row on row, for all of those who faced the foe. I heard the news that you’d arrived My heart was full, many tears I cried I vision you in your mother’s arms Peaceful in her motherly charms. It’s hard to be miles across the sea When home is where I wish to be I will carry you in heart to the day War ends and I am home to stay. If I never get to meet you, my son It was for you I fought on and on I did my best but didn’t see War could be the end of me. Lying here in a hospital bed Slowly I feel my life on earth ebb I ask God above one request Let us meet before I’m laid to rest.
