Notes About The Poem

Sara's 'Wicked Twist on Fairytales Contest * 5/19/25

Grimm's Version of Peter Pan's Perversions

Most of have heard or read the Adventures of Peter Pan
A boy who never grew up and lived in Never Never Land
The rewritten story goes that Tinkerbell is in love with Pete
but in the original shadowed tale, Tink liked her whiskey, neat
J M Barrie was asked to write a sunnier children's version
to cover up Pan the Man's vices and his sexual perversion
He didn't huff like the big bad wolf, with pigs always squealing
What Pete's all about is puffing the weed he's been dealing.

I've fractured the tale; twisted it back, as would've Grimm
The factual Peter Pan story makes a mockery out of him
Turns out, living in the land of the lost boys wasn't so great
and Tink didn't want Peter to be her true love or soul mate
That 'fairy dust' she sprinkled was said to make people fly—
But her dust was the powdered kind that got them flyin' high
Night life in Never Land makes that hotel in southern Cali
look innocent as teens with pom poms at a school pep rally

Peter's nice guy image was nothing more than Barrie's illusion
A Disney gimmick to make him look cool, but a secret collusion
That frat faced kid was one of the shiftiest villains on the scene
but the costume designer had him wearing tights, forest green
Truth be told, he was nothing more than a druggie, a user
When deep in his cups, he became an abuser, a mean boozer
That fairytale lie was like taking a walk in MacArthur Park
When someone ate Pete's cake, he became diabolically dark.

He wasn't a friend of those lost boys. He kept them as slaves
cooking crack, twenty-four seven on that island in dank caves
That's not the worst of the telling of this horridly sinister tale
Pete was a pimp and told Wendy, 'Darling, you're for sale."
There was a lot going on that innocent Wendy didn't know
Like when he mentioned needing more ice, he meant 'snow'
He captured Tiger Lily, hoping to make her a 'lady of the night'
Couldn't bribe the chief of her tribe. It was a scalping or flight.

Then, there's the misconception about mean old Captain Hook
but what Barrie's lines didn't reveal was that Peter was a crook
When Hook threatened to expose Peter, turning him over to a cop
Pete's sharpened sword took off Hook's right hand: chop chop!
The crocodile wasn't a man eater, just part of J. M. Barrie's crock
Thought it'd be amusing to kids for him to have swallowed a clock
The Jolly Roger is a ruse as a frigate that sets sails as a pirate ship
But it has twin diesel engines to give the pestering narcs the slip
Drugs and women... below deck are the rooms of Pete's bardello
Peter Pan is many things, but don't think he was ever a nice fellow.

Its impressive how youv turned this peter pan story to a whole different vibe, and given something that children should definitely not read or mayb read because fairytales taught us to believe in so much that isnt true and we expect what we learned through those fairytales! I love tinkerbell haha. And now after reading this i will have to think twice! What a brilliant and clever poem and its also impressive how youv rhymed throughout! Rhymes just come so easy for you! Best wishes dear linnersz! Sending you light always

I'm so sorry I sullied Tinkerbell for you, Ink. I've actually met her at Disney World, and she's quite a cute little pixie! Not so sure about the innocence of Peter, though. Thanks for your review and remarks.

Yikes! Peter Pan, the boy who never grew up… man. Think I need a spliff drink - sorry, I meant stiff drink, after tiptoeing through that darkened tale, Lin. Duke, mentioned the word ‘screenplay’ and with all the re-imaginings in film land nowadays, I think he has a very valid point. Thoroughly enjoyed your sinister rewrite. All the best in the contest. Terry

I did find myself wondering whether Sara was looking for well known tales to be twisted, new tales or our choice. In the end, I couldn’t help but use recent events. Your brilliant entry is both a twisted traditional story AND a brilliant virtually new story… can’t go wrong ;-)

I got a titch carried away, didn't I, Terry? I don't think the original version is a G rating, but children don't see that... thank goodness for their innocence. This one is more than just a stretch. lol thanks!

Lin, this is very clever and a lot of fun to read and think about. There are probably a lot of men who would idolize a Peter Pan as you describe him. What's actually funny is how you satirize the Disney presentation since it's black and white in terms of good and evil, and we know that life doesn't and can't work that way. Personally, I would rather trust scientists and peer review to formulate a sustainable approach to commerce. This is an excellent piece of work. It shows how anything we take for granted might not be exactly as represented. You might use this as the basis for a screenplay and a sensational film. Although funny, there's a lot of painful outcomes in this Peter's wake. Take care!

A screenplay, Duke... and have me certified for a place such as Bedlam? lol I'd offer apologies to Mr. Barrie if he were still able to read it. It's best that he's not! It was quite a journey that I took inside those pages without anyone making me walk the plank of the Jolly Roger. I made double darn sure I avoided Tink. Many thanks for your time of reading and leaving your thoughts.

Dearest Lin, What a riot and a wild, clever, and wickedly funny reimagining that turns childhood nostalgia on its head! I love how you blend dark humor, sharp wit, and a fearless voice to expose the shadows behind the fairy dust. You make the familiar strange and thrilling. Yes, i was on this bold, brilliant ride through Neverland’s underbelly-only you could pull it off with such style! Spring Blessings, My Dear Lin, Daniel

I got lost in the writing of this walk on the dark side. Lol Thanks, Daniel. There are more characters but I thought I’d better stop. I am more than happy that you enjoyed it. Stay away from Tink!! Thanks so much!
