Notes About The Poem

Direwolf, Dire Times

I watch the sun rise and once again bring another dawn, Another day in which we are alive. I stand 30 feet above the muddy ground, on the top of our walls, at the end of my watch shift.
In the mud I see what passed in the night as if viewing a screen video… like what Grands talks about from before Colossal Biosciences began their de-extinction work.
Large Canine paw prints scattered throughout the mud surrounding the entire wall. At least it seems the sabertooth has either moved on or been killed. No sightings of her in 2 weeks.
I wait for my relief to come so I can get some much deserved rest when a clamour arises in the town center. Moving from the outside view toward the inner wall, I see a group preparing to leave. And it looks like they intend to go hunting.
Manteca, our only wooly mammoth, is at capacity with Sergeant Sapiro in the lead. They're going on a direwolf hunt. The packs in these mountains have grown numerous and strong. Once Colossal Biosciences began their de-extinction agenda,Things got mightily out of hand. That was 65 years ago and more than half of the human population in North America has been wiped out.
Between the unintentional reanimation of some extinct viruses and diseases, and the population explosion of these once extinct animals, many of which were predatory, only the strong and clever have survived. Building defendable cities, relearning survival techniques, and becoming proficient in fighting, hunting, and weaponry, has been one of the only reasons for survival.
That and a return to the worship of the one God, the God of Israel who has shown us the miraculous! Once we put every idol behind us, every distraction from our Spiritual growth, He has showered us with blessings. Just as in the days of Moses, we can still read about for we made preserving His Word a priority, Jehovah God has been a literal presence and strong tower in our days of troubles.
Our community, just as those we have been able in resent years to connect with, still retains the freedom of the US constitution. For the most part anyway. Our people want to keep the freedom of choice our grandparents had. So we do not demand everyone worship the same. Everyone has the right to freewill as God intended. I think God would not want anyone forced into worship but wishes for us to love Him from our own free will. After many chose to do so however, and the miracles began in earnest, many believed and chose to worship Him.
The hunting party begins to file out of our gates and all the watchers, who stand every 20 feet on the wall around our city, kneel simultaneously. We pray in one accord, giving sincere thanks and ask for the safe return of our people… for better days ahead.

When you make of your heart a stone,
                                    God's creation groans,
                                       Mankind will atone.
