Dark Skies

As sky looms grey at close of day,
   a frigid north wind blows;
amidst the howl of day so foul,
   these trying times expose.

The eve seems grim as light grows dim,
   and darkness closes in;
while all around without a sound,
   the eerie night begins.

Within a squall the snowflakes fall
   and gather on the sill;
a sign to some of things to come
   that lie beyond their will.

I miss the norm of summer’s morn,
   of daisies in the field;
but don’t look back, you can’t re-track
   a past that has been sealed.

We must instead forge on ahead,
   to hesitate unwise;
exert our best while on this quest,
   and face these darkened skies.

Beautifully written, enjoyed the Poe-like feel what the heart of winter inspires...

Beautiful nuance wrapped in ominous darkness. I can feel the wind and discomfort of the night which you have poignantly described . Yes, we must forge on because, on the opposite side of darkness is light ! Hugs dear John . Susan :)

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and comments, Susan, I appreciate it. I tend to write poems like this in winter, my least favorite season. Warm hugs, John

"Dark Skies," are "a sign to some of things to come." Especially this time of year. I like this thought- "We must instead forge on ahead." You're saying: Keep moving forward, warmer days will be here soon. Like you, I'm ready for the Summer sun, flowers swaying in the wind. Many wonderful blessings to you, my sweet friend. Hugs, Brandy

I loved your wonderful use of rhythm and rhyme throughout this poem, as well as it's imagery. You've really captured the eerie feeling that a dark, winter night can bring... Nicely done, John!
