Chainsaw

Helping my father and uncles when I was ten,
felled a tree, on break then ready to go again.

I walked around the corner of the truck
as someone pulled the cord and I got stuck.

Now that chainsaw’s engine didn’t start,
but it didn’t have to, to rip my skin apart.

Right through my jeans, but not too deep,
saw my flesh before it began to seep.

Dyed my t-shirt like a canvas with the body’s ink,
those cells made a mosaic from red to pink.

To my surprise, I was left with no pain,
but anesthetic’s steel lacked the mercy of the bar chain.

Skilled hands drove a cutting needle’s threads
through clotting cascades and capillary beds.

On my right thigh, a scar’s pledge,
for every kind of limb, Stihl has the edge.

I grew up with wood stoves and still have an old Fisher. The incident did not make me fearful of chainsaws, just made me more careful. Nothing like wood heat on a frigid day

This brings memories, Rob ... much of my childhood was spent in the woods, tree houses, blazing miles of dirt bike trails, but also clearing trees and selling cord wood, and I had many a "close call" with my trusty Mac 10-10, one that cut the toe of my boot straight through, but just scraped my flesh, (separated my fingers on my right hand, but that was sheet metal and a different project). I was blessed to be a kid at a time when parents had few worries about kidnapping. Love this write!! :-)

I am extremely careful now, including wearing chaps and ear protection. For years, I didn't wear either. The fingers injury with the sheet metal must have been rough.

I use a chainsaw regularly throughout the year so that played a part in my choice as well. Thank you for reading and commenting.
