The Unforgiven Night

It was after eleven at night and the storm raged on like

some angry monster seeking vengeance. Lightening lid up

the sky while gale force winds pounded the home of Tina

Trevin. She laid awake in bed, the covers pulled up to her

chin. Her gray eyes reflecting the blue grey color of the

relentless electrical discharges. The electricity had gone

out and her bedroom was covered in blackness.

She had been reading in bed when the lights went out.

Each time lightening and thunder erupted, she could see

the hallway leading to the kitchen like some sort of wooden

path to the unknown. She wanted to get up to get some

candles but fear left her tense and frozen to her bed.

Her tortured mind now struggling to remember whether

she had locked all the doors as her mother had instructed

her to do. Her parents were visiting her Aunt Cathy but Eve

did not want to go. She pleated with her mother to let her

stay home because, after all, she was almost fifteen. She

didn't much care for her aunt, because of her old fashion

ideas. Now however, she wished she had gone with her

parents

The book she had been reading laid by her side and she

was afraid to touch it. The title, " The Undefinable" had

been checked from the library that day because it sounded

sinister. She enjoyed reading about the supernatural, scary

movies and stories but tonight, listening to the wind howling

outside, she was frightened and never before.

She strained to listen to a strange noise coming from the

front of the house. The sound she heard did not make any

sense. Her distress mind knew these reverberations to be

malevolent. What she heard was really not a sound, it was

more like a felt sensation that produced goose bumps.

Deep down in her soul she knew that, if she investigated,

she would see something vile and wicked. She pulled the

curtains to one side, peered out and saw nothing but

darkness up and down the street. The electricity had left her neighborhood looking like an abandoned neighborhood

covered in a blanket of darkness.

She used her foot to pushed the book off the bed but

couldn't stop thinking about the story. It was about a girl

her age that had gone missing while walking home. The

police suspected that a strange presence had taken her.

The girl had been the fourth victim and the witnesses all

describe the perpetrator as some sort of apparition because,

he or it, was without form. Sweat began to form over Eve's

body and she couldn't stop trembling. The storm outside

sounded like a devil howling from the depth of hell. She

began to sob and closing her eyes, she could feel something

or someone in the house.

A scratching noise coming from the back door sounded as if

someone or something wanted to come in.

The moving dark shadows reflecting on the walls after each

lighting strike were like apparitions staring at her. She feared

someone had entered the house through the back door but

still she could not move.

She knew there was a flash light in the kitchen but she was

afraid of groping her way in the darkness. She listen intensely

as a choking fear took control of her senses telling her she

was not alone.

Eve heard soft patted feet or hooves in the living room.

The wooden floor creaked as if someone or something was

coming her way. A loud thunder blast shook the house and

as the rumble died, she heard a low slithering sound similar

to that of a serpent.

She was sure someone or something was in the hallway

coming toward her bedroom. The rain pounding against the

window pains masked another noise but she was certain

she heard breathing in the hall. Frozen with fear, and terror-

stricken she wanted to run away to relieve the horror, but she

couldn't.

The lightening and the pounding rain made it difficult to

identify the soft noises coming closer. Terror griped her so

completely that she pulled the covers over her head and

fainted. Eve did not see nor heard the thing coming toward

her bed.

She was safe in her unconsciousness and oblivious

of the cold arms lifting her. The apparition was like fog

moving with deliberate intentions for it knew that this girl

was the one it had been searching for. He knew that for

him to become human, he must do what needed to be done.

The apparition took Eve to the living room and placed her

on the couch. It stood looking down at the girl pleased that

he had finally found the one girl who would satisfy his hunger.

For hundreds of years the specter had been traveling all over

the world in search of this one little girl.

Now, she was before him and he wanted the moment to last.

Outside, the tempest raged on and with each thunder, the

spirit felt more at ease. He knew they would be alone for

two days and that was enough time for him to do what he

wanted to do for so long.

He leaned closer to the girl's face and he could smell the

scent of her innocence and he felt almost human. Eve's

breathing was that of one who had finished a mile long sprint.

The phantom began taking deep breaths taking in the girl's

oxygen causing her to gasp.

After each breath, the spirit would extract a bit of life out of

the girl's lungs. He stood up and looking down at Eve, he felt

an uncontrollable urge to possess the girl completely. He

wondered whether to have her on the couch or take her

outside and complete the job while the rain, lightning and

thunder looked on.

It picked up the girl and walked out the back door and

placed her on a cement table. The rain had plastered Eve's

night gown to her body and seeing this, the Spector lifted

his foggy head to the sky and howled like a wolf. He had

waited so long for this and felt he could wait no longer.

Reaching down he exposed Eve's soft throat and pulsating

breast. It began licking her breast and neck and her taste

was like nothing he had tasted before. Dark clouds laden

with rain looked down witnessing the spectacle below.

The spirit laid next to the unconscious girl and it could feel the

warmth emanating from her young and innocent body. A

deafening thunder clap jolted the girl and as she fought to

open her eyes, she found herself in bed. The sheets were

wet and they were wrapped around her body.

Trembling and cold, she wondered whether her wetness was

from perspiration or if she had been sleep walking out in the

rain. She tried to remember the dream but her troubled

mind could not distinguish the difference between a reality

and a nightmare.

The storm had abated and the silence in the house was

so intense that it hurt her ears. There was a scent in the

room she had never experiencedbefore. She wondered

whether a rat or some bird had die in the house. She was

about to close her eyes when the she heard the same

scratching noise again.

She felt something jumping into her bed and as she tried to

scream, no sound came out of her tortured throat. She felt

something soft rubbing against her face and hollered,

“Peanut, you naughty cat you scared the shit out of me.

Are you scared of the storm too?” The cat began to purr

as it made a couple of turns then curled up by her head.

The storm was leaving her area and the scent of fresh wet

earth mixed with decay was around her. The dream was

still vivid in her mind and knew she would never forget it.

The lamp in her bedroom flickered and turned on and the

distinct hum of her refrigerator sounded louder than usual.

The digital clock on the night table blinked 12:00 as her cat

jumped off her bed and ran mewing to the kitchen.

“Peanut can’t you just wait a minute until I get your food?

I'm just as hungry as you are.”

Walking into her gleaming kitchen, she saw the cat on the

marble counter pawing at the cabinet where the food was

kept. Opening the door, Peanut began to mew looking at Eve

with bright green eyes.

Taking a can opener, she took out a can of tuna and after

opening it, she placed the contents in a blue plastic bowl

with “Peanut” stamped in big yellow letters on its side.

The house was cool and the battery powered clock on the

counter reflected 3:00 AM. The storm now moving

westwards taking with it the rain laden clouds thus allowing

the moon to see the earth. Eve looked out her kitchen

window and saw small branches and leaves covering her

yard.

She finished her breakfast and heard Peanut mewing by

the door wanting to go out. She unlocked and opened the

door saying, “Leave those birds alone and if you bring

another bird or mouse to the porch, I will never let you

out again”. She saw her cat dashing across the yard as

if it knew where small creatures hid.

She closed and locked the door after turning out the lights,

she walked back to her bed, she felt tired and sleepy.

Yawning and turning off the lamp, she got under the covers

and tried to sleep. A soft sound made her open her eyes and

she saw a strange mist in the hallway.

The scent emanating from the mist was that of rotten meat.

She was sure that what she was looking at, was just a

hallucination brought on by her experience. The misty

figure stood by her bed and its soft and gentle arms went

around the young girl's waist. Feeling the cold and oily touch,

Eve fainted and retreated to a world where she could escape

the horror of what awaited her.

The end
