My way to work

My way to work

I take the leisurely way, though the subdivisions, and back roads in order to enjoy my ride. It might take a few extra minutes but to me it is worth it.

This morning, for example, watching all of nature’s beauty; all the signs of love that I came across, all the animals I spotted, I think I smiled all the way there. Kentucky touches your soul, this time of the year, and always.

Colorful foliage made me appreciate nature’s pallete. Golden leaves gliding down to earth gracefully, as if carried on an angel’s breath. The ground was covered with them in some areas so dense, it remined me of a treasure of golden coins that had rained from heaven. The smell of earth, leaves and late blooming flowers was teasing my senses.

I pass by a small, old farm. The subdivision has moved in on the little farm and I do not look for it to be there much longer. But for now it is a pleasure to come across the peacfully gracing bulls, the small creek that divides the property. One morning a Blue Heron touched down in the water just as I was passing by.

I see signs of love all around me and that make me smile. It is evident in so many ways. In the carefully tended lawns, Hyacinth vines growing on telephone poles, pretty bird houses and bird baths, cultivated flowers in all colors, birdfeeders ready for winter; all this is done out of love. The playhouses for kids, sandboxes, swing sets and lawns full of toys are also an expression of love.

Several homes that I pass stand out for various reasons. One has a large front lawn that shows a luscious riot of flowers almost all year long. I always look for it. Another is decorated to the fullest for every season. Right now bright pumpkins line the flower beds, cornstalks are leaning on the pillars, many urns of glorious blooming mums are interspaced with evergreens, and scarecrows are smiling at me.

A sqirrel decided to cross the road as soon as I was close enogh. We both jumped and squealed, and as soon as the little fellow was savely on the other side he stopped and let me have a well deserved tongue lashing!

That made me laugh out loud.

Passing a water puddle in front of a few old trailers also made me smile. Earlier this summer, when it was still hot, I passed that way and saw three young boys there. A rain shower had filled that depression and the boys were happily playing. As I watched, one of them, wearing an old gray, way too big t-shirt, took a flying leap right into the muddy water. Mud splashed all over, but the look on his face was so satisfied and happy, I had to laugh. I laughed so hard I had to pull over.

The kids saw me and waved. We wave at each other now when we meet.

It is so easy to smile. What a wonderful world!
