Just Another Night

A friday night, the rain was pouring the 4th time straight, the scent of dead leaves and water is a reminder what season we're in.
I only just got out of a night class, 3 hours for just sitting on a chair, listening to what the poor man had to say, in a class of 15 people who couldn't afford to go to a 4 year right away, or they simply didn't have the grades. I am in no position to judge.
I desperately needed a coffee, a hot mocha which can, not only calm my night, but can also, cure my depression, a sip can keep my brain active. I'm 2 blocks away from the coffee shop, the shop has been around for years, it's quite popular; good coffee, and the pretty girls that's making the coffee seems what's making this business successful. I walked in wet, but I wasn't soaked, and as I walk towards the counter, I see my good friend, Jenny.

I wanted to say "hi," but there was a man sitting across from her, talking to each other, both dressed up nicely, looks like a date to me, unless she gets off leading on good-looking men by smiling and looking at them with such passion and affection, either way I wouldn't judge. I get my coffee first and went to go sit down somewhere away from them, pretending to not notice her, I wanted her to notice me somehow, because first, she's my friend, second, if it is a date, I don't want to intrude.

I'm almost done with my coffee, as much as I hate coming to this place because of the prices, they make very good coffee, and I really don't care very much about the coffee they sell in convenience stores, so I'll put up with it. I get up to go order a cookie. As I was walking to the counter, Jenny surprises me.

"Hey Erik, what's up, you out already?"

"Well, yeah, it's almost 9." I said resentfully.

" What's with the attitude, aren't you glad to see me?" she said confused.

" I'
m sorry, I'm just a little cranky because I haven't ate much all day and I was about to get a cookie then you came out of nowhere and surprised me." I said with a calmer tone.

"Oh I see, get your damn cookie then, I didn't mean to bother you, haha." she said in a mocking matter.

"Anyway, whatchu been up to, anything exciting?" I said knowing what she's about to say.

"Well... I haven't been up to much, but I am on a date with this guy I met in a store." she said in a cheerful manner.

"Ha, I should've known, after all you look like you're on a date so I figured" I said feeling smart.

As I was getting my cookie, the man-that Jenny is on a date with, came walking towards Jenny, and I finally get to introduce myself to the man, he's taller than me by a couple inches, I can tell he goes to the gym often, how he stands speaks confidence. I felt intimated.

"Jenny, how about we go back to my house and finish our coffee there?" The man said eagerly. "Oh, who is this guy you're with?"
"oh, yes, this is-"
I interrupted poor Jenny.
"Hello, My name is Erik, I'm one of Jenny's friends, nice to meet you," I said in a calm yet genuine manner.

"I see, a friend right?" How interesting, are you gay by any chance?" He said with a polite tone.
"Um... no I'm straight." I said confused.
"Oh I see, just thought I'd asked, considering that I don't see many men being friends with women, and just staying friends, nothing else, I apologize." He said in a neutral expression.

What kind of question was that? What the hell is going in this man's head! I do find Jenny to be an attractive woman, but her personality isn't future wife material (sorry Jenny), not every guy wants ***to fuck their friends, I think... but if they want and they both agree, that's okay- I won't judge...
what the hell am I thinking now, I need to say something.

"That's okay, but you probably shouldn't assume the worst because she has male friends, after all I don't try to steal other people's partners, so,there's no need to worry haha." I said confidently.

"Oh trust me, I wasn't worried, " " if you were taller, then maybe, but overall, I'm ok thanks." he said humorously

I think he is trying to "win" this somehow by trying to be the "Alpha" in this... conversation? I ***see what he's trying to do, is this fucking middle school? Is this response a "shit test?" Why is this guy who looks like he's in his mid- twenties, pulling the same thing the women I dated in the past tried to do, this guy is not only pretencious, he's just as insecure as me, I feel sorry ***for this handsome piece of shit.

"Hey, guys...you need to stop, Tyler stop trying to mess with Erik with your childish tatics, " Erik stop engaging with him, both of you are acting like children!" Jenny said with such assertiveness.

"Okay I'll back off, I didn't mean to come off strong, I thought we were only having a friendly talk, isn't that right Erik?" Tyler said with a friendly smile.

" Jenny.. you know, I wouldn't start a fight with someone I just met, after all...he seems like a friendly guy, with immature traits- I'm suprised you lasted this long without having to punch him yourself Jenny, your a lucky guy Tyler!" "I guess you finally found someone who can put up with your insecurity, I wish I had the same." I said with a regretable taste in my mouth.

"Jenny, let's go back to my house, this guy doesn't seem right to me." Tyler said.

" No, I
don't think I'll go with you tonight, perhaps next week." Jenny said with despair.
" Ok, just forget it, goodbye Jenny, I'll see you around Erik." Tyler leaves with a mix of anger and sorrow in his tone. Poor basterd.***

Jenny sighs, " Can I ride with you Erik?"
"Yeah...sure, it's a couple blocks away, let's hope it's still there haha." I said feeling funny.

We walked in the rain, as we were walking, I was worried about my car geting wet from inside from our soaked clothes as the rain was pouring heavliy on to us, I can see jenny shivering and breathing heavily, the rain is sliding down her face. I can't tell if she's cold from the rain or sad from the bad date. Either way, I don't care, I only wanted to go home and take a warm bath to forget about this night, this cold rainy friday night.
