GREW OUT OF HER

‘Hello’
‘Hi’, I replied
‘I think I have seen you in our C.D.S meeting. Are you still looking for an apartment?’
‘Not really’, I smiled graciously. ‘I have just got one not too far from here which is so so amazing’.
I stole a little of her time while I explained the details.
‘That’s good for you’, she said abruptly. ‘I am still looking for, so I need to continue searching’.
‘That’s okay. I think I can help. Saw a vacant apartment not too far from here. It’s not too bad’.
‘That’s great’.
I then followed her with her friends as we went to the vacant apartment which she finally accepted and moved into.
That’s how I met one of my closest friends during my service year at Ilesa, Southern Nigeria. We became really close and I spent most of my time in her apartment after I closed from work. She is such a lovely lady that I hardly got hungry during my service days. Though I wasn’t the only beneficiary, since she has a kind nature. I was more than grateful for Kelechi, the lady not too far from where I once lived.
‘Williams, how far?’ it was her on the phone.
‘I am good o’, my whole being lit with joy
‘How are you doing? How is your family? Hope you are good?’ rushing all of it as my being couldn’t keep it in.
‘I am fine o. I am really enjoying this Xmas break, though I can’t wait to be back to our station’
‘Same here. I really miss you’, my smile widened.
‘Miss you too’.
We then returned from our break which most of us spent with our friends and families. There was lot of hugs, laughter and stories shared among ourselves of how the break went.
I went back with a new determination to achieve more, make the most of my time left and develop myself. I wasn’t too comfortable with spending all of my time chatting in Kelechi’s room. But her response was very alarming.
‘Williams, so you don’t visit me again?’ she said with a sour look.
‘It’s not like that now. I have been quite busy that’s why’, feeling quite guilty.
‘I came over two days ago, hope you do remember’, I said with my shoulders raised higher.
‘You now have new friends, that’s why?’
‘You know that’s not true’, I retorted
I tried explaining but she replied with a faint smile.
That was a beginning of our endless quarrels. She thought I wasn’t appreciating her as a friend which I tried to prove by being of help in many ways. She couldn’t just trust me and saw me as an enemy.
I once felt I wasn’t doing enough but looking back I discovered it was something that would have happened at a point. Since for her chatting all day was just okay, but for me life should be carefully planned.
