Eli's Vision
This past spring and summer, our almost six year old grandson, who was living in our home at the time, frequently came down the stairs to our Grandparents suite dressed in his t-ball uniform, and carrying a backpack, which was filled with his makeshift ball gear. He would come to our door and announce, “It’s time for a game Grandma and Grandpa!” How could we resist? So out we’d go to be his fans.
Eli would put on his hat and ball glove first, and take a stance in the middle of the driveway as a pitcher. He would pitch a great imaginary ball with the moves of a pro and then promptly drop his glove and grab his bat and become the batter. He played by the rules and never missed a beat.
We grinned when he would put on his soccer shin guards and a football helmet to serve as his catcher’s mask. Then he would squat in catching position calling the strikes. When the game was over he would slap the hands of the imaginary opposing team members {win or lose}. There was no doubt in his little mind that he had really played a game, and, by seeing things through his eyes, it nearly became real to us as well.
When I recall these precious moments, I can’t help but ask,” What if we could have God’s vision by merely packing our spiritual bags with the proper gear and then went into action playing the game according to God’s rules? Might a better world become as real to us as Eli’s game became to Him? You know what? With childlike faith, I think that it just could happen!
