A Special Girl

I spent Christmas with my sister and brother-in-law. We went to his nephew's house. We had a great time. His brother and his wife were there and the nephew's kids were there. The nephew also has one beautiful granddaughter. She is one year old and she was having the time of her life. She was running around between all the adults and enjoying all the new stuff and all the attention she was getting.

When we first got there, they were starting to eat breakfast, so we sat down and had breakfast with him. A little bit later it was time to open presents. Most the family was crowded in the room with all the Christmas presents. There really wasn't room in there for me, there was also a shortage of chairs. So I sat on the stairs just outside the door and watched everything. First they let the little granddaughter open all her presents. She was having the time of her life. Then the adults started opening their presents.

She walked out of the room and saw me sitting on the staircase. She held out one of her hands to me so I took it and held it for a minute. Then she held up the other hand I held both hands for a few minutes. Then she pulled her hands way and ran down the hallway. A few minutes later I saw her peeking around the corner from the dining room looking at me on the stairway. Now I was sitting on the second step of the stairway because it was most comfortable for me. After a few seconds she decided it was all right and sat on the first stair about as far from me if she could get. Then she got

bolder. She moved up one stair to the stair I was sitting on. Then she started sliding over until she was sitting right next to me. We sat together for several minutes and then she got up and left. A few minutes later she came back and put her arms up like she wanted me to hold her. I picked her up and held her on my lap for several minutes. (I don't get the hold young children very often anymore and it is always a thrill when I get to). I turned to my sister and I said I have a new friend. She just smiles and snapped a picture of us. A few minutes later the girl wanted down so I put her down. She ran away, a few minutes later she was back. She sat next to me again, she did that a couple of times. One time she climbed right upstairs. I told her mother she went upstairs. Her mother came and called her but she wouldn't come down, so her mother went up and got her. One other time she came and stood next to me I tried to pick him her up again but that time she didn't want to be held, so I let her go.

It never ceases to amaze me the way kids act. Some are open and loving and playful. While others are shy and quiet. All kids have a capacity for love that is truly amazing. It is the way the adults around them treat them they can make that love grow or unfortunately in some cases die. We as adults have a responsibility to these kids to help their love grow as much as possible so that they become productive adults. Kids with enough love will not go out and get hooked on drugs and steal and do other bad things.

I can tell this little girl has a lot of potential, in whatever way she decides to go she will be very successful in whatever she decides to do when she grows up. She has the love of many adults to help her and that is a big step in the right direction.
