A Broken Rendezvous

On a beautiful Summer’s evening, I was sitting on a bench by the beach.

The Sun was at its final stages of leaving our shores for lands unknown.

What a privilege to have the chance to immerse in one of nature’s finest tapestries, a perfect blend of golden russet with a tinge of pastel pink, a sight to behold; of a gloriously vibrant Sunset.

With the cool gentle sea breeze brushing past me, and without realising it, I started to have flashes of memories from an awful event from my past staring at me.

The sunset on that unforgettable day was as beautiful as today's sunset, picture-perfect.

This incident is something I have a hard time forgetting.

On that dreadful evening, I was waiting for my friend to arrive, and as the surroundings were so relaxing, I didn’t notice when he arrived.

He appeared to be out of breath as he was rushing toward me.

He gave me a beautiful bouquet of roses and apologetically said,“Sorry, I'm late”.

As I took the flowers, I replied,“ I didn’t mind the wait".

He reached over and took me in his arms, his embrace was a tight hug, yet gentle and tender.

He released his grip and gave my hand a touch of a kiss.

As he looked up at me, I noticed his eyes were sad, I felt something was amiss.

He glanced at his watch, shook his head and then said,” I'm Sorry I Can’t stay,”

I was shocked and bewildered, as it was less than a few minutes, and he was off and on his way.

He gave no reason or explanation but just left.

The long-awaited romantic get-together didn't happen looks like it wasn’t in my destiny.

My thoughts turned into a multitude of questions, all swirling in my head, and all I could do was stare at the ocean as far as my eyes could see.

A good while later, I took the flowers I had taken earlier to throw them in the bin when I noticed a small heart-shaped box taped to the stem of a red rose.

I opened the box, and a ring fell to the ground. Upon retrieving it, I could see the words “Love-token”, with both our initials written on it.

But before I could think further, a little voice said, reality check, it said.

“Don’t ask why, don't create unnecessary stress, do yourself a favour and admit that he probably wasn’t the right fellow”.

Then my heart butted in and said, “Take some time, distract yourself, don’t be too sad and please don't wallow.
