In reality JC,we may conclude 'haiku' is the form in japanese... translations thereof into English and poetic attempts thereof in English ..are unrhymed tercet ie a tristich ...whatever..they remain the most succinct imagist form .. more so in their one line or one word even,...variations.

My education in poetry thanks you for this beautiful comment. And I do love the imagism in the haiku. I think Jack was trying to break from the oft-discussed rule of western haiku that it had to be 5/7/5 syllables in a 3 line poem. I have seen the haiku in a single line format and without the 17 syllable restriction. Most of the American Haiku poems I have come across ignore the 17 syllable or 5/7/5 or even the 3/5/3 rule

I apologize for not getting back to my blog earlier for comment. I have been nursing a Migrain for the last week. Unfortunately, when I have one, I am unable to focus. I must say that I love the discussions going on in my first blog. Thank you all for stopping in to comment.

Congrats on your first blog, JC!:-) Haiku sure is a tricky poetry form, as short as it is. It's one of the most misunderstood as well. It gets confused with Senryus(concerning human emotions) a lot. And the fact its written in 2 different ways( 3/5/3 or 5/7/5 syllables) have budding poets scratching their heads. When I first started writing poetry in 2006, I was writing senryus thinking they were haikus, lol. Haiku is strictly about nature, like Constance said. I only write haikus using 5/7/5 syllables.

Not that I don't like talking about haiku poetry. Because it's one of my favorites subjects, I only mention it as I didn't see any listing of American Haiku form or even Beat Poetry. Which I guess is a form of free verse but was stylized by the era poets at that time. From my limited understanding that it, meant as a spoken form. As they often did in coffee shops etc. at the time. And like I said, my knowledge of poetry is limited if next to nothing. And perhaps they are listed under a different name. And Beat Poetry may not even be a form but a general reflection of the poetry of that era. And I most welcome all discussion on this as anything, said only helps to further my education in poetry.

JC, congrats on your first blog, I find that writing haiku or haikus is a very sticky subject, everyone has an opinion on how it should be written, and does it matter really, as long as it is haiku like and beautiful and about nature _Constance

I agree with you. But as someone who has very little knowledge of poetry but a lot of heart. When researching a place to call home for my poetry. I came across a list of Haiku poems by members on a site I was at. Though one of the poems that I read was not a haiku by the standard definition. It was a lot like my Forgotten Love poem. 4 Stanza's of individual Haiku to make up a larger poem. Someone commented that it was not a Haiku and that they should not call it that. And again I don't want to make this all about Haiku poetry. I simply thought that in my limited knowledge of poetry if we had enough of more modern forms of poetry in the forms. And perhaps we do have a generous amount of more modern forms on the list, and I am just not aware of this, because of my lack of knowledge.

Thx JC. I have a copy of "Allen Verbatim" ('74) but he does not say anything about Jack's haiku work tho' Jack is mentioned often. For those interested, there is "Book of Haikus" [penguin] I believe it is all of Jack's haiku(s) ~beto

Yeah, This was an interview with a French Publication. I am not sure it's apart of Allen Verbatim, but I will look up Allen's Verbatim. There was a poem By Allen Ginsberg that I was trying to find when I came across his Haiku poetry, Howl. He seems to follow in line with Jack's American Haiku form.

One tip JC,TPS(aka Mark Pringle)has a policy for inclusion here of 'new' forms ...that evidence is produced from the net that they are already widely used!! A kind of ' circular requirement' imho...just saying..

Thank you, Brian, I was not aware of this. And I just want to say that I in no way was criticizing the forms list. I don't know enough about the different types of poetry. I simply came across notes by jack Kerouac about Haiku poetry. I had been noticing that quite a few famous American poets had been using similar Haiku formats. And The Soup only defines the Haiku in the traditional Japanese style with the accepted 5/7/5 rule. Perhaps maybe a addition to the definition with an note about the American Haiku form. Again I only wanted to create a blog that had a discussion narrative to it.
