"How To Eat A Poem"

<P>This wonderful description of how to enjoy poetry, was written by Eve Merriam...and is a favorite quote of mine, one I felt&nbsp;worthy to&nbsp;share with my Soup Friends.&nbsp; In other words, she is telling us to dig in, savor&nbsp;a poem, enjoy each word,&nbsp;it's a gift that feeds the soul!&nbsp; </P> <P>"How to Eat a Poem&nbsp;"____ </P> <P>Don't be polite.&nbsp;---- Bite in.&nbsp;----Pick up with your fingers and lick the juice that may run down your chin.&nbsp;----It is ready and ripe now, whenever you are.----You do not need a knife or fork or spoon or plate or napkin or tablecloth.----For there is no core&nbsp;-- or stem-or rind&nbsp;--or pit--or seed&nbsp;--or skin to throw away.</P> <P>&nbsp;</P> <P>&nbsp;</P>

Hello members of Soupers .. i couldnt agree more yet i wonder if this site brlong to a religious groups? or cause sometimes i feel art free .... so whats the limit as i can see from few comments seems poet should uphold virtue/ and if that so then there is no freedom ... well i just wonder if anyone can tell me directly best regard Isa

I like to go back for seconds and thirds, too. I judge poetry by the number of times I read it. If the first read goes well, I'll read a second, since I got the meter and rhyme acclimated to the mindset. If the second goes well, I read it a third to get into the mind of the author and any reads after that is for the pure pleasure it lends to my day. Carrie (I believe we've crossed trails a few times before) this is really a good analogy and food for thought... he! he! Thanks for this. ~<><

Hi Carrie. I read your biography and it is amazingly similar to mine. (about Dad, Southern CA, Son, love of horses :) Let's have lunch together and "Eat A Poem". Love, Iolanda
