I was born in Des Moines, Iowa. During the war Mom and my sister and I lived in Mason City until Dad came home. Then back to Des Moines. Graduated High School at Topeka High in Topeka, Kansas, and then went right to work for Hallmark Cards in the Litho Art Department. This proved to be better than a college education in art. Met and married my husband in Topeka, then moved to Staten Island, NY to take over De Jong's Bakery, the family business. We ended up in Colorado, bought a new bakery and settled down to raise our four kids and a menagerie of critters on a 15 acre homestead. For the most part, these were wonderful and fun filled years. Then I lost my husband of thirty-seven and a half years, January 1, 1998. Happy New Year.... It just hasn't been the same since, and a fair amount of my poetry reflects this transition in my life.

I have always drawn and painted for pleasure, to tell small stories, but I also have always written down my feelings. Sometimes when I couldn't find the words to say them out loud, or when I was filled with joy or frustration, writing set the feelings in order. (I am famous for having the right words to say the next day after the wrong words were already said!)

Locally I am a member of the Greeley Poetry Club, and the Greeley Art Association. These are fun groups and has flowered some good friendships.

I am a watercolorist of wildlife and Americana subjects. If you are interested, here is the link to my website and blog.

I just have to laugh. I don't know why people have to control their lives. (And I'm one of them.) (Be quiet Wayne.) Colorado shows us everyday how futile that is. Saturday we broke a record high of 75° degrees. No wind, just afternoon sunshine that felt hot on the skin. What a pleasurable respite from winter.

Amazingly, I must have automatically decided for my body that the day was the norm, because here I am freezing my self clear to the shivers. It is Sunday, and the temperature is 32° degrees, and the wind is blowing with a purpose, AND, there is snow covering the ground. I am absolutely unable to get warm. The furnaces are set at the very same setting they were yesterday, but today they too are grumbling and growling and seemingly not getting the job done.

Even Gizmo, curled up on my lap as I type, is only getting one small patch warm. When I stick my hand under his blanket, I get this dirty look as if to say, "What did you do that for, and get it out of here."

Well, I think I'll go now and get some cheese to go with my whine. Or even better, some hot chocolate, a lap quilt and a good book.

Have a good day. Til' next time ..... ~J~

Colorado is such a wonderful place. I was stationed at Ft. Carson, right outside Colorado Springs, with the 75th Airborne Rangers a long time ago. The Garden of the Gods was my favorite place to visit and BBQ. I also received my first degree from Pikes Peak College which was El Paso Community College. The hockey games there were exciting. It was so relaxing listening to music from the pipe organs at the Air Force Academy Chapel. This piece is memory refreshing. ~ Joseph

Judith, you are having the weather that the doctors love. It's the time of year they make their money. Spring is just around the corner I have been told. Of course they told me this a month ago and it isn't here yet. Hope you see spring soon also. Remember it is just around the corner.. Love, Carol

Elaine, talk about one-ups-manship!! No wonder you cannot wait for spring. And you have longer to wait than I do. Mercy. The only way I can equate to your situation would be me, at about 6, in Iowa, walking very carefully on 1/2 inch of ice over a foot of snow, trying not to break through. But then it was a marvel. Now ... ick! --Vince-- I'm sure you'd miss the snow. One of my favorite things is having a full four seasons. Could not live in Florida e.g.. Hot chocolate was delicious Shar!

Yesterday- here in Ontario, Canada, the tempature soared to 60 degree and all the snow melted and flooded the fields and the rivers. Then - last night it rained and the temperature dropped and it changed to freezing rain then snow. Today it is 30 degrees. A new inch of snow covers a endless sheet of ice. I can hardly wait until spring arrives. Lainie

I moan about the cold in Pa., but it doesn't compare to Colorado. Still trying to convince my wife that Orlando is the place. Warm winters and hot sun filled summers, but I think I'd miss the snow around Christmas. Keep warm. Vince

Stay warm dear Judith. The weather seems to be acting strange everywhere, which I guess now is the norm. Hot chocolate sounds good to me, even thought it was about 60 degrees here today, I could still go for some! Take care. Love, Shar
