I was born and raised in the south-central West Virginia. I graduated from Nuttall High School, Lookout, WV in 1959 and went off to Berea College, Berea, Kentucky. After my freshman year, I enlisted in the United States Air Force, where I served for four years in the beautiful state of Hawaii. While there, I attended Jackson College and the University of Hawaii.

Upon my return home to West Virginia, I married and had two exceptional children, Emily and Adam Hankins. Unfortunately, that marriage ended in divorce after about seven years. During those same years, I graduated from the University of Charleston, Charleston, WV, receiving my baccalaureate degree in history.

About this time, I published my first chapbook of poetry, The Lady in the Pink Hat. It was published by Candor Press in 1969.

Between 1968 and 1981, my poems appeared in Christian Century, Writer, The Poet, Cameo, Grit, Quintessence, Author/Poet, Tangent, The American Poet, Prairie Poets, The Baptist Leader, and Parnassus. My poems appeared in the following anthologies:  Major Poets Anthology #6, Prairie Press Books, The Soul and the Singer Anthology, Young Publications, Field of Daisies, Nina Brewer Henry, Editor, Prairie Press Books, and Yearbook of Modern Poetry, 1981, Young Publications,

Articles and short stories appeared in Hoosier Challenger, Housewife/Writer's Forum, Capper's Weekly, Vegetarian Times, Writer's Digest, Equipping Youth, The West Virginia Hillbilly, The Mountain Laurel, Christian Education Today, Leadership, Christian Leadership, The Final Draft, Writer's World, A Better Life For You, Lifeglow, The Messenger, Collector's News and the Antique Reporter, Writer's Gazette Newsletter, Animal Press, The Central Virginian, Pocket Inspirations, The Preacher's Magazine, Chips Off the Writer's Block, Huckleberry, West Virginia--Then and Now, AIM Magazine, Appalachian Heritage, Fiction Forum, and i:The First Person.

(More recently) I obtained my master's and doctoral degees in Theology at Trinity Theological Seminary. I served churches in West Virginia, Ohio, and Virginia before retiring in 1997.  A compulsive writer, my poetry, articles, short stories, and theological writings have appeared in numerous national journals and periodicals, mentioned previously, and including Biblical Illustrator and the renowned Pulpit Digest. In 1992-1993 I was selected for Who's Who in Religion. I was also elected to the international poetry society, Y Escambi Internationale. One of my poems was read into the Congressional Journal of the United States. I am also a member of Pi Gamma Mu, an honorary sociological fraternity.

(Even More Recently) I published a book of Appalachian short stories, Ashes on the Snow, and, A Sensible Theology for Thinking People (A retired Southern Baptist minister talks candidly about the Bible, Theology and Contemporary Concerns). For about eight years I wrote a weekly column for the Huntington, WV Herald-Dispatch.

In the past couple of years, some of my poems have appeared in PS: It's Poetry, Arczis Technologies, Inc., Nursery Rhymes & Stories, Eve Roper, Compiler, Kindle Direct Publishing, and PS: It's Still Poetry, Volume II, Arczis Technologies, Inc.

My "A Sensible Look at Genesis" and my autobiograph "A Pedestal in the Closet" remain unpublished. I have edited three doctoral theses and continue to edit poetry chapbooks and short stories for family and friends.

I have been interviewed on both radio and television. For two years (2016-2017) I published and edited my own website, "A Columnist With a View."

My wife Deborah and I moved to Catlettsburg, Kentucky to operate The Presidents' House Bed and Breakfast, where we remained until we retired a second time and moved to Ashland, Kentucky. My wife Deborah of 35 years died November 22, 2018. In the years since her death, I have been very active on the Poetry Soup and All Poetry websites.

I continue my work as a freelance writer and editor. I am available for editing projects by contacting me at:  amsmilt@windstream.net

Evaluating Poems in My Contests

Blog Posted by L Milton Hankins: 10/9/2022 12:31:00 PM

In view of recent posts (since removed, I understand) suggesting that I am unfair in my judging, I suppose it is time for me to address the issue and how I go about selecting the placements in my contests.

First of all, I have strict, rigid requirements which I spell out in every contest I sponsor. I will not apologize for them, ever. A contest IS a contest, after all. In each contest I sponsor, I have been known to toss out poems for misspellings, subject-verb agreement issues, change of subject/theme, strange and unnecessary punctuation, and other petty mistakes, and all too often, for an obvious lack of proofreading.

Second, if some people consistently win in my contests, there is a reason for it. We have some first-rate, exceptionally gifted poets on this site who constantly submit their work to contests. It only stands to reason that their poems will generally rise to the top of the placement lists. So, frankly, if you want podium placement, then you are going to have to write better poems on the stated themes and requirements than they do. Can it be done? Absolutely. Is it easy? Not so much!

Thirdly, I am very strict about anonymity and non-biased evaluation of poems. I read poems blindly. In 99% of cases, I do not know who wrote the poems submitted. But, in a few cases, I have come to recognize the style of a few poets, but this is something I cannot help. And, whether you believe it or not, that does not give them any edge in my evaluation. I will toss out poems from the best poets on this site if they do not proofread, follow instructions, and pay attention to grammar, punctuation, subject/ theme, and maintain high levels of poetic skills, etc. I was a forensic judge for years, so, in addition to having written and published poems for years and studying poetry at the university level, I have loads of experience in this field.

Fourthly, [and I want to make this perfectly clear], it is possible for the same person(s) to win every contest I sponsor if they submit the best poem(s), in my opinion, to my contest. In regard to this, I have to evaluate each poem against every other poem submitted. This is not easy, considering poems will range over a wide variety of themes, but it is possible, and I do it for every single poem for every contest!

Fifth, and last, you do not help yourself with me if you ignore my admonition about contacting me regarding your entry. I do not want to hear from you, period, if you have an entry in one of my contests, for obvious reasons. I do not want to know you have entered a poem, and it certainly will not give you any advantage in the evaluation process. Indeed, it can hurt you. If you do not place in my contests, take a little time and consider the sorts of poems you are submitting to my contests. If your poem is N/A'd, do not ask me why...read your poem and ask yourself why!

I hope these explanatory notes will be helpful to you, especially in the future, as you submit poems to my contests. I can assure you they will be carefully and fairly considered. --Milt

A GENERAL NOTE: I do not understand how a person can come on here and write volumes of criticism, sometimes malicious, and then simply delete his/her remarks. This person has removed all his comments which precipitated the responses below. So, it's difficult to understand what all of this "tempest in a teapot" was about.

I have had that Milton, not regarding contests And by those who I have thought would know Better, I mean to the point of calling my intellect Of low calibre, However though i was Dissapionted in their personal attacks I resonded with calm measure.' Its really unnecessary.' And yes the item of offence Was also removed.'

I know Milton has very high standards when it comes to judging and you can see the high standards of poetry of those who were placed in his contests. I'm not surprised to see Jenna's name on a list of other poetry contests because she is a brilliant poet. Anyone that is concerned about receiving n/a s in any contest shouldn't enter. Tom

That's very kind of you, Tom. I appreciate your comments, and quite sure Milt will, too. No one should have to be defended against the wiles of a loon.

I'm so sorry you are upset "Deduson Brown." I have read what you have to say, and I believe you have major problems not related to your feelings about my judging. If Poetry Soup causes you such anguish, why not just get away from it, period. Incidentally, others win in my contests as regularly as Jenna Logan, but, for some reason, you do not mention them. I place the best poems I receive in order, based solely on the poem and my ability to evaluate them, and I shall continue to do so.

Not one poem have you posted on PS under this newest of your fake names, yet you complain about Milt's judging ability, claiming he's showing favoritism, and even seem to be well acquainted with Andrea's poetry. How stupid do you think poets are not to recognize your MO? And if that's not enough of a dead giveaway as to who you are... your terrible grammar and misspellings are further proof.

It seems there's no stopping you from creeping back into the soup, Freddie. It's obvious to me, and to others, that you're insinuating again that I'm the 'certain poet' of whom you speak. You give yourself away with the accolades you again bestow upon Andrea. ANDREA, not taking anything away from your poetic skill, but you need to know this is Freddie Vasallo, who has been banned many times under different names. Just two days ago he posted the defamation nonsense about Milt being an inept judge by awarding me so many high placements in his contests. FREDDIE, you need to give up your constant harassing of people here. Are you that psychotic? Time for admin to take you out again.

oh wow, I am only just now seeing this, Jenna, and hearing about the defamation stuff being linked to my name. I really do wish Freddie would stop with this nonsense. it's been going on for years and years (my name being brought up in regards to many other topics, and I honestly don't know why this happens mostly to ME). I don't even know where Freddie was when he was bestowing accolades on me. What??? And what name is he using? Anyway thanks for the heads up. Now I understand Milt's response to me below.

From reading below here, I learned accusations are being thrown around about you? Sorry to hear that, Milt. You make it very clear in your rules what you are looking for. Also, the times I lost, I understood why when I read the winners (there was only one time I felt bad to get an N/A from you but it was a matter of taste because I discussed it with you in a Soupmail). People can always go to you after you give your winners and ask you why they got an N/A. Don't stress about it, Milt. Frankly, I will never do a Premier Contest because I could never narrow down my winners to only ten, but to each his own!!

As I said above, I only learned today about the guy Jenna thinks is Freddie. I never saw anything he said here and had no clue of his "new name." I could write a book on the many strange things I have seen here in 13 years, Milt. My oh my.

Sunshine Smile, I'd say most of us who submit to contests do. I always say, "It's just one person's opinion. A hundred other people may love it."

Milt, I am aware of the false accusation made against you that has prompted this blog... the vengeful troll who returns to the soup every few months to create havoc. Your integrity should never be questioned, and I'm delighted to see so many poets defending your honor. You've been exacting and transparent in this blog, pointing out your criteria and credentials. I, along with so many others, thank you for the time and talent you offer this site.

Milt, I know exactly how you feel. I have been running contests for a long time on PS. There are always some who are not happy with their placement or not being placed at all. I too run my contests with strict requirements. You're right a contest is a contest and should be challenging. I agree that poems should be submitted after they have been proofread and spelling and grammatical errors corrected. I think we all have been on the receiving end of disappointment if our poem does not place. It makes it more gratifying when our next poem may place. Pay no attention to the negativity and trolls on this site.

Milton I want to think this is a case of Sour Grapes. Where someone is upset because they did not place in your contest and has an ax to grind, instead of realizing their entry was not sufficient for placing in your contest for the reasons you stated above. You have some that are frankly, upset in their placement and will displace their anger in unfair criticism. Your above board integrity speaks for itself, and your experience in writing speaks even louder. Being a judge is a service that you donate from your personal time to read, and judge, and post. It is a task that many here would not undertake. All who enter any of your contest should be grateful that there is a contest to enter...

Great blog, Milt, well said. We each have our yardstick to judge and I don’t know why anyone should be agitated about not qualifying ~ it’s a subjective assessment, after all. In my own case I confess I’m at the opposite end of the spectrum, according lesser weightage to style and more to addressing the line of inquiry, although I do take a look at syllable, grammar and rhyme. We actually write for ourselves, ready to share with those who pair. So I’d also say, relax folks and enjoy!

Milt, I think you are a wonderful contest sponsor and judge of poetry. I have won in your contests and I have failed to win often, but no matter what I have learnt something about my writing. Of course, we judges recognize styles, some tell me I have a way of writing that is hard to miss, is that good or bad? not sure, but I am not about to change. Keep doing what you do and those of us who appreciate it will continue to enter your contest, win or lose, Constance

The poets that take their personal time to administer and judge contests are the backbone of this site. They not only deserve thanks and appreciation from all of us competitors, they deserve our respect. No judge, especially one as active on this site as you Milt, should be made to feel unappreciated or biased. Remember, it only takes one or two, and as for the rest, I believe they feel the same as I do. Thank you for what you bring to PS.
