Brian, your words ring so true, art and poetry and books are in the eye of the holder and their imagination, we each will see a work of art or a poem or written piece differently, our life journey and emotions play a huge role, the piece must speak to our soul, sadly many artists, poets etc never knew fame in their lifetimes and died in poverty

Yes Constance,thats the beauty of our diverse uniqueness(&why incidentally contest sponsorship is a subjective pastime).The key to creativity is the acomplishment of the urge,rather than any fame or fortune associated therewith.

There is a movie out right now and I went to see it the other day: The Last Vermeer. It's based on a true story of an artist (I think Dutch) who swindled the Nazis by duplicating the works of Vermeer. The critics hated his original works, and in those times, the critics determined whether an artist had a chance of success or not. How sad that this man had to imitate Vermeer to finally achieve fame (The book about him is "The Man Who Made Vermeers). I just looked up his name: Van Meegeren. He is considered the best art forger who ever lived! he was an outstanding artist too in his own right.

Awesome. By the way, did I get a little booklet of yours many years ago as a contest prize? I seem to remember I got something like that from a contest sponsor. Was it you?

Your comment Andrea has prompted me to order Frank Wynne's book (whilst we await the film/dvd herein England) Vermeer prompted me artistically/poetically a few year back as this blog shows http://vermeersgirls.blogspot.com

actually Van Meegeren was a very good artist. But the critics' unfair assessment of his work destroyed his career. I am glad that he was able to get back at them. The same critics that condemned him were telling the world that his copies were the REAL DEAL!

Interesting Andrea,copying is a good way to learn & develop.There have been a few such 'copiers' in recent years Clearly talented but unable to use it to create their own usp which is key to all artforms inc ours.

Good point, Brian. There are many artists whose works weren't appreciated by the public until after their death—Edgar Allan Poe, Emily Dickinson, Vincent Van Gogh, to name a few. "It is what it is." ;)
