Goodbye

Goodbye is often thought to be the end
As one begins to let go of the past
That has gone-by so fast
And have now become so painful to comprehend.

Some think it is more about turning onto a clean page
Of a brand new chapter in one’s life
And holding back tears held on the edge of the knife
While reminiscing of those memories gathered over age.

In that moment nothing seems to matter
But one has to only deal with the pain
And inevitably utter the words all over again
-Goodbye for now, I will see you later.

To others saying goodbye is like saying farewell
To all the times once shared and had
And those moments happy and sad
But have over the years been kept well.

It is the moment one realizes that the sun has set
And they are about to enter the night
And thus have to put things right
Of all the worries and anxiety beset.

Goodbye is often said with a sad pause
And maybe gestured by a hesitant wave
Gentle kisses and hugs so tight and grave
But generally expresses the main cause.

Overall, it is about starting a new adventure
A new road that one has to travel
And new experiences that one has to marvel.
But it is certainly not a permanent departure.

Excellent poem, Mpho. Well rhymed and the message was clear. Your descriptions of the different ways of saying goodbye were so well stated, they flowed verse to verse. I enjoyed the read very much. Thank you for sharing your poetry wuth us. Bill
