Culloden Revisited

Heathen warriors dressed in the plaid
Victims of time and an evil brigade
Pursue their beliefs far into the South
Gaelic words from a Jacobite mouth

Like bairns against many a gun
The highlanders decided to run
Not for home and to safety for sure
But on, eyes glowing with revenge and more

Years ago when those from the south they came
Leaving thousands on our hillsides, all slain
They stole our life and what we had made
With their falseness, cowardice and anti-accolade

But now the tables are turned time about
Revenge is found now, many lessons will be taught
Against those who fight with machines of steel
May defend, but our devilry will help us kill

Once again we'll live alone in peace
Sad how it had to end as massacre
Resentful we are but necessary to achieve

So let the pipers play and broadswords sag
And dance below the Fairy Flag
With jigs and reels to please the folk
Voices of the aged in the darkness, do croak

The waters of the loch are crystal clear
Only one shall disturb me, brother of mine
his barren land that we love so dearly
Only hours ago we lost it nearly

We fought as only Scots know how
Completely fearless, pipers in the line
Until we defeated- was only a question of time
Our life, life.....wonderful tartan life of mine

No Tolerance

Gaelic must go, the British Government ruled
They took our lands away
Banned the pipes and wearing of the tartan
But our memory holds to this day
Our strong sense of lineage, it’s influence is vast
Traceable back to Somerled
Who masterminded the Viking outcast

Ours is a land steeped in hospitality and charm
Home to the eagle and the wild deer
The mountains, lochs, islands and moors are a celebration
Of what the Gaels hold dear
A strong new generation of Gaeldom has now grown
Out from ages past
It’s seeds of genealogy have been sown

Tears

It’s time, the watcher has proclaimed
The Earth has been badly maimed
Mankind’s been dealt a heavy blow
It is for real, and not for show

Tears of remembrance, and tears of joy,
Tears for somebody, that soldier boy.
The all seeing eye cries out in pain
Our World has been wounded again

The swordsman taking all the knocks
Feels he’s living in a paradox
This is all in his imagination
Holds his breath in contemplation

Tears of remembrance, and tears of joy,
Tears for somebody, that soldier boy.
The all seeing eye cries out in pain
Our World has been wounded again

Now’s the time to find all the clues
Seeking out celestial news
Search for the foe, the evil raptor
Before we enter the final chapter

Pharoah

You came from a legendary period in time
Possessing almighty power
Respected and worshipped by those who serve
And feared by those who cower

Creator of the mystic pyramids
  Four sided structured tombs
The Old Kingdom bids farewell
An immortal existence looms

You once fought in Nubian wars
Upon that desert sand
We’ve never understood your genius
So evident in the land

History says you spoke an ancient tongue
And carried a golden ankh
Certain that Ra would emerge each day
Your subjects in prayer would thank

Under the cover of the veil of your disguise
Who knows what your future will behold
Those that fear you, are those that you despise
Now you are a legend, your story may be told

Steeped in Eastern mystery
As a God you live forever
Out of the hand of Anubis
We’ll underestimate you never

Epitaph

Put me in a binbag
When I pass away
I really don’t mind at all
‘Cos where I’m put I’’ll stay

They come on Thursday morning you know
In their Phoenix truck
So throw me up in the back
I’ll be undiscovered with any luck

It’s reassuring to know you see
That nobody cares at all
In this time of monetary cutbacks
To economise with the funeral

If the council should complain
Saying “ it’s not our job mate “
To cart away late personages
T’is a job that we really hate

The journey out wasn’t too bad
The truck was in fact rather cosy
The in-flight meal was garbage though
And the pedestrians are rather nosy

And now the sun is going down
Over this council tip
It really is quite nasty here
I don’t think it was worth the trip

Last Mission

We flew out from Kirmington, Germany bound
To bomb Frankfurt, and the area around
One of a thousand planes that took to the air
Mine was a Wellington, assembled with care

I was a Flight Sergeant on the old R/T
Also an air gunner, yes that was me
We should have had six on board that night
Only five of us left to join that flight

The long journey out was cold but routine
Each of us checking his part of the machine
But once over the target, the flak was so bad
It instilled fear into this Italian lad

We dropped our bombs and turned for home
Split from the pack we are on our own
It’s nearly dawn as we cross over France
The enemy’s about, please give us a chance

Nearer and nearer we get to the French coast
To survive this run, we would boast
But an Eastbound 109 turned his guns our way
Fate was sealed; this was not our day

Badly we are hit, and losing height fast
Doubts arose if we would last
But faith in our skills kept that last hope alive
If only we knew we wouldn’t survive

We crashed in the sea just off the Le Harvre coast
It was that final dive I hated the most
Screaming and crying, our souls plead their case
All killed in action, and lost without trace

The Church

Church bells ringing throughout the land
Summoning those who hear
Up to that stone building on the hill
To hear stories and news from far and near
The feet do chatter upon the steps
That lead up to that great door
Once a week they all gather here
Yes, they keep coming back for more
The one is dressed in parochial attire
Leads the followers in song
Inside this structure of serenity
That has served it's people so long
And in the grounds the elders lie
Complete with heads of stone
Some have lain for decades here
They listen, but never moan
People come and people go
But the church remains forever
Occupying it's place on Holy ground
In a way a kind of spiritual lever
The birds that nest within the eaves
Show reverance to the Chief
In choosing here to roost and breed
A kind of ornithological belief
So once again the week begins
All shoulders to the wheel
To earn essential currency
And to provide the daily meal

Seasonal Highland

Snow lies thick on the highland ground
Blood red sunsets most nights are found
Capercaillie perched high in the Scots pine
This fairytale landscape, I wish it were mine

A fresh highland wind brings buzzards on wing
At ground owls hunt and song thrushes sing
The water is now losing it’s wintry chill
And soft green shoots emerge to thrill

Summers here and the air is getting hot
Blooming marsh orchids display all that they’ve got
Pikes out hunting and deer families roam
In this beautiful place, these creatures call home

The heather now takes on it’s autumnal bloom
Stags roar in the misty mountain gloom
Pink footed geese inbound from the iced splinter
Small mammals gather rowans to prepare for the winter

Leaving

I must leave this place of learning
The time is right to go
Follow what my heart is yearning
Achieve I will I know

Faces came and faces go
Throughout my teacher years
What they learn and what they sow
Should conquer adult fears

They have sat and simply gazed
As facts and figures I taught
Were they really that unfazed
At the education I brought

A career is like a river
That finds it way to the sea
Invariably always the giver
But rewards are there for thee

Stealth

This plane clad in black that I wanted to see
Throughout this year it has eluded me
My one chance to go and see it take flight
Was thwarted by another venture in sight

A thing of beauty from an aviation view
Built for a purpose, achieving it too
Sinister and dark, appears to float in the sky
Quiet and elegant, it deceives your eye

Wingspan so vast, and eerily black
Alien technology is right on track
With a dedicated crew and ground sustain
The balance of air supremacy will definitely remain

None see it coming and none see it go
Virtually invisible, but it’s been and they know
It’s presence is noted by the damage that’s seen
This plane is stealthy, wicked and mean

An electronics showcase, it has the best spec
Avionics wizardry keeps it above the hard deck
Four General Electrics keep it high in the air
A vast armament ordnance in case of warfare

The crews are high ranking and full of immense trust
For this bird with unbelievable thrust
Nothing in the world can equal this craft’s pace
This one’s a winner in the aviation race
