Richard Milne Poem
In a sentiment I started a long time ago
I tried to tell you just how much I need you
you were my garden, I said
and my fountain of youth
you were proof that God made sunny days
and sandy beaches for lovers
I also tried to say I'd be honest as I could be
and still be me
so you see, when I spend time by myself
get a little lost in myself
and try to commune with nature
sometimes I get lost
but I always find my way home
home to the garden
the fire that warms me
home to the love that feeds me
back to the place I most want to be
back together, always together
you and me

Richard Milne Poem
on the road to Beverly
past Corfu, Smyrna
a battered homestead
a rusting hulk
hot wind, dust
storming sky, raging river
how much better than backbiting and fear
contempt energizes above
a crack, the rip
bolt over the shoulder
Mother Nature's huzzah
then silence, crickets
soft wind
and the leaves sound like rain

Richard Milne Poem
Son it's not hard to sonnet
it's just how you look upon it
pick something that's timeless
either rhyming or rhymeless
give it a rhythm
and begin
show what a mess it's in
we're in
is anybody in?
You can't help but win
try to be relevant, funny, poignant
try again to be new and different
maybe agin' the government
even warmed over platitudes
can help your self-gratitude
and so what if a lifetime of searching for the right rhyme
is no more than a crumpled piece of paper
in the ashcan of time

Richard Milne Poem
Brother, have you lost your way
Or is it just my imagination
You always seemed to have everything so together
Answers for everyone else
Pretty melodies and moving verse
But you’re looking worse for wear
Brother, is that fear in your eyes
Or is it resignation
All those causes you fought for remain
As the years slip away
Life grows shorter every day
There’s no escaping the march of time
Feel the spirit within you stir
That’s the voice of the Lord saying
Surrender to me
Call it conscience
Call it what you will
You can’t purchase grace
It’s free
But you must believe

Richard Milne Poem
Soggy grey skies been hangin' 'round this week
puddle jumpin's gettin' old
my brain's gettin' moldy
and this ain't headcheese I'm talking about baby
Lately the day's grind winds on into the night
and it don't feel right
there's nothing but bad news
and I still haven't got used to you gone
So I think I'll just sit here and hum me a new tune
something blue and lazy
I know you think I'm crazy
but I don't care
I care so much about you
I've been cryin' my eyes out without you
It's gettin' so my eyes are like
soggy grey skies

Richard Milne Poem
Angel of mercy
you came in the daytime
burst on the scene like a beauty queen
and knocked the sox off me
sunlight and smiles will be your legacy
sure you cried when the clouds rolled in
sure you cried when the screen went dark
but you've left your mark
and its warmth and sweetness will haunt my memory
if ever you go away
and as the shadows dance
by the fire's glow
I'm loving this romance
and glad we took the chance to care
a penny for your thoughts
a fortune in your smile
and as the evening fades
my worries pass away
soothed by the way you make this house a home

Richard Milne Poem
Near Catavina
surreal
God's movie set
escape to a scape from another world
huge boulders, goofy cacti
comical scrub trees with tapering
barrel trunks
thousands of tiny thorny arms
And little furry creatures
scampering across the roadway
dodging the pizza man
as the sun set
the full moon rose
and the art director
above it all
painted everything
in pinks and purples
and fiery reds

Richard Milne Poem
Dangerous days, fractured families, hardened hearts
At His feet is where the healing starts
Father God, Blessed Savior, Light of the Universe
Humble me Lord, so I walk your way, not mine
Help me release the desire for control
And experience life divine
It isn't about who is strongest or biggest or loudest
It's not who has the most toys when they die
That's more than a sales pitch, more than a bumper sticker, more than misguided
It's a dangerous lie
Some will sell you a dream as reality
While they sell their souls and give the devil his due
Now matter how they ply you with sweet talk and promises
Don't give in, don't let it happen to you
People will tell you it's not a big deal
You really haven't got anything to lose
But in the end there's only heaven and hell
It all depends on the path you choose

Richard Milne Poem
three jars of baby food and an apple, green
that's what her money bought
she fumbled with two wrinkled dollar bills
and some change
but it came to a dollar ninety-three
a few cents for the cookie jar
she was 19, 20, perhaps 21
no ring on her finger
no car to take her home
the baby waited patiently
past the checkstand in the grocery cart
as mom gobbled the apple
and waited out the rain
now tonight
somewhere down the street
there's a baby crying in hunger or pain
and someone's roof won't stop the rain

Richard Milne Poem
Christmas Cheer
tough time of year to be single
hard to be split at a time like this
everywhere around is yuletide bliss
people arm in arm huddled against the chill
ah yes, I remember it still
steam on the windows, lights on the sill
fire crackling hot cider wine
holly, cedar, pine scent in the air
friends, family, goodies galore
sweet child giddy on the night before the day
when a dream comes true
toes curled warm, snuggling, cuddling
sweet treats and turkey, pies warm from the oven
the feel of family
an aura of familiarity
sensitivity, spirituality
communion, reunion, rebirth
a new start and memories
