Nik Pearce Poem
God asked Noah to build an ark
he was happy to oblige
but he wasn't so keen
when he found out
what had to go inside
Two of every animal
then you must set sail
the animals were fearful
the whale began to wail
Even the Gnu knew
this idea would surely falter
but every beast preferred this idea
than being led by nose to slaughter
Noah followed the order
from gnat to lion to horse
this was a recipe for Pandamonium
but Noah knew this of course
Seating plans were issued
but an almighty row took place
The lion the king of the jungle
argued that he was a special case
The Queen Bee wanted second billing
while the Emperor penguin demanded a throne
while the homing pigeon panicked
at not being able to find his way home
Nightime was the worst
sleep was beyond them all
with the woodpecker continually pecking
and the gloworm lighting up the hall
The doves tried to keep the peace
as all hell broke loose
while bets were taken on who had the longest face
the horse, anteater or moose
The pandas tried to be romantic
sleep deprivation made their eyes go black
the magpies kept stealing the others duvets
and the squirrels were nuts to turn back
The elephants said they'd never forget
and they wished they packed more in their trunk
while the terrible smell that stunk out the place
was eventually blamed on the skunk
The bears awoke with sore heads
they had drunk all their supplies in one night
while the hyenas found it hilarious
at their next door neighbours plight
The crows shouted blue murder
but the bats were blind to it all
the ravens were ignored by the masses
as all they said was 'never more'
The maggots agreed it was just rotten luck
to be stuck in this mobile zoo
and every time the peacock showed his feathers
it made the pigeones coo
The badgers were set in their ways
the sheep said their wool was a curse
while the spiders got a verbal warning
for using a sows ear to weave up a purse
Finally they found dry land
the hare raced out in the lead
while the tortoise said there was more to life
than doing everything at top speed
Noah was happy that the journey had ended
and this was the end of the road
but at least one species had enjoyed the trip
the rabbit population had increased ten fold!

Nik Pearce Poem
Stung by thoughts too evil
to comprehend
to try to explain
I feel this pain
As sharp as ever,
Pricking me into consciousness
Holding my breath forever
Teasing me into submission
I yearn for sleep
But these voices urge me on
to commit the sins of others
to condemn my parents by association
to a son no mother could love
They try
god bless them
to help me
to usher in a new dawn
to give me a will
to fight not to bend
but i prefer to live alone
with the demons that dance in my head

Nik Pearce Poem
Young men
Willing to carry
The weight of the world
On their shoulders
Not yet ready to bare their souls
Or to let their hearts be lost
To vote for government
But to their cost
They hold their heads high
And walk in to battle
To extinguish the dreams of others
And like for like
To have their hearts and dreams stolen
They sign the forms
To die for a land
That promises much
Then takes with the other hand
that they believe as heroes or martyrs
They will be remembered, treasured
By future braves
who all to soon
will follow their footsteps
And be lost
Forever.

Nik Pearce Poem
96 fans awoke that day
travelled to Sheffield to see their heroes play
96 had tickets for Leppings Lane
96 never returned home again
96 people packed in, gasping for breath
praying for life enduring death
96 names etched on a memorial plaque,
next to an eternal flame
96 lives lost watching the beautiful game
96 families reduced to tears
still fighting for justice after all these years
96 souls not left in peace yet
96 reasons to never forget

Nik Pearce Poem
I wish I was the one
but I know I am not
it is not me that makes you cry
tears of despair or tears of joy
thoughts of me
do not keep you awake each night
I am not the first one you think of
when you awake in the early hours
I cannot shower you in kisses
touch your cheek, wrap my arms around you
and promise you forever
I can't give you long smouldering looks
then wink to make you laugh
or say something corny and make you cringe
My impending visits won't set your heart a flutter
my silence or my leaving,
just an inconsequential stutter
to the day that the one returns
and sweeps you off your feet
leaving me behind
to sit
and watch
and weep

Nik Pearce Poem
She sits in the corner
and rocks to and fro
searching for memories
she lost a long time ago
She closes her eyes
and sits back in her chair
looking for faces and places
that are no longer there
she fidgets with her buttons
makes noises not words
trying to recall
things she has heard
she stares out of the window
at the flowers and leaves
but no longer sees the wood
through all of the trees
Locked in her body
cacooned in her mind
there are plenty of exits
but she can't read the signs
cursed by this illness
she is losing the fight
encompassed by darkness
where once there was light
When the time comes
there will be grief and relief
for years you have been slipping away
bit by bit
piece by piece

Nik Pearce Poem
O to be beside the sea
When winter’s cloak unfurls
To sit beneath a silent moon
and watch the waves recoil
O to be beside the sea
Taste salt on unkissed lips
To drown below a million stars
The icy burn of frozen fingertips
O to be beside the sea
Now visitors have left
A town so full of life
Falls silent and bereft
O to be beside the sea
A chance to dream and weep
As the solitude of winter
Renders this coastal town asleep

Nik Pearce Poem
I remember that day well
Dad wore his best suit
It wasn't really black
But Mum said it would do
I remember arriving early
and waiting for it all to begin
Mum passed me a Hymn book
and told me to join in and sing
I remember the clock striking eleven
well I remember the tenth strike
but then all I remember are the screams
and that blinding flash of light
I remember Mummy crying
and Mrs O'Reilly's face
I remember that sort of sick smell
that hung around the place
I remember seeing flaying arms
and bodies strewn across our street
I remember smelling burning
and the sound of pounding feet
I remember the tears and the bitterness
the continuous crying sound
the sheer hatred, the disbelief
houses burnt too the ground
I remember the man on the TV
in his long black coat
shouting about the revolution
and telling us all how to vote
I remember the revolution claiming victory
while the church bells tolled for the dead
I remember thinking where is Daddy
and crying that night in bed
I remember life was never the same
people abandoned to their fate
but most of all my friend
I remember Enniskillen November eighth

Nik Pearce Poem
From the beginning you were always there
A large lady filled with joy
and dolly mixtures
they were your favorite
You were short in stature
with a huge heart
you couldn't afford much
but everything you had you passed onto me
except for that black curly hair
that would never go straight
no matter how you teased it
You kept the house spotless
dust too scared to gather in your presence
the kitchen was your sanctuary
and your domain
if I close my eyes
I can still smell the scent of freshly baked scones
and cheese straws, bread and apple pie
I'm not sure I told you how I felt
I hope now that I didn't need to
that you knew
that the smiles, hugs and request for seconds
were enough to tell you
I loved you

Nik Pearce Poem
Do not fear the darkness son
the light will soon return,
Do not harbour evil thoughts
you may become undone,
Do not cry when made to bend
it's better than to break,
Don't be scared by of words of love
or scarred by words of hate,
Do not nuture bitterness,
keep faith with those you trust,
Do not covert others lives
or mistake love and lust,
Do not hide emotions
behind words that cause others pain,
Do not forfeit the truth
from such deeds you will not gain,
Be honest with your friends,
show respect to any foe,
but must of all my son, remember,
you may reap what you sow
