Entry of a Honduran-American

Entry of a Honduran-American

My heart beats to the rhythm of my mother’s homeland.

My eyes search for the similarities of the lands of the ones I am in & the land that I cherish.

My lips taste the fruits and don’t quite reach the length of the smile from the ones I have tried.

They tell me, ‘but you are American,’ I tell them ‘no, I am what I choose to be.’

They tell me, ‘you don’t look Hispanic.’ I tell them, ‘neither can you see my blue blood.’

They tell me, ‘it is much better here.’ I tell them, ‘it is much different there.’

I hold dear the memories of the scattered homes on the mountains, brightly lit beacons of hope.

You know you love a land when you even love the rooster that crows every morning.

My heart beats to the rhythm of Honduras.

Come One, Come All

Ringing jingle bells, the winter fairy called "Gather 'round,
gather round" to all populating the winter fairy land.
The land used to be dry and cracked and made up of sand,
But Frosty the Snowman made it snow,
Santa Claus built a toy factory and made the land glow.
Building toys, lighting up children's hearts -
That was the beginning - the very change and start.
Winter fairy said to all - "it is Christmas soon -
the more the merrier - come one to hear, come all!"
She rattled off "the evergreens need trimming" -
but all the fairies were in the hot springs playing and swimming.
She rattled off, "the toys need wrapping,
but all the snow elves were napping!
She was about to give up when Santa came on his sled
with sleigh bells a'ringing - he started off the Christmas anthem
song - he started singing.
The Christmas spirit awoke within all -
The more the merrier - come one to celebrate, come all!

Lil Dog

Perky, pesky, pretty-petite;
yippy, yappy, always-in-need-of-a-treat.
Loving, lazy, little-lump;
Cutie, cuddly, see-how-high-I-can-jump?
Spoiled, sneaky, snacky snoot,
Munching on old chips, teething on mum's leather boot,
overly-sweet, oogling oaf,
maybe-just-a-bite-or-perhaps-the-whole-loaf.

If I Were An Elephant

“If I Were an Elephant”

Too many people look past my beauty,
Look too intently at my ivory.
The huntsmen I fear,
Of wildcats I steer clear.
They all want what I am made of,
Not what I am - not my wisdom, my peaceful demeanor.
I stand tall, I stand proud
I am closer to the stars, I admire each passing cloud.
My young I shall teach to be strong,
Though many look at us all wrong.
I am tall, I am proud,
I will not tilt my head, you will not see me bowed.

I Look Up To Her

She is four years younger,
But she is stronger.
She is mentally mature & knows how to speak her mind.
I look up to someone younger & smaller than I,
My little sister, Rachel, we have a special tie.
We are two sisters, in a world of hecticness.
She knows what she wants, she knows what she believes,
And she is determined.
I look up to her.
She works hard to achieve what she sets her mind to,
She doesn’t bend to the world’s ways - she doesn’t care much what is or isn’t ‘cool.’
She creates her own breeze, her own sun, she believes in Father, Spirit, Son.
She is my little sister - but I have so much to learn from her.
It is her confidence, and compassion, and strength,
That carry her to become her truest self.

The Small Things

There are many things in life to enjoy,
But none are as spectacular as they seem.
For me, the best things are small,
Not grandeur, not from a fantastical dream.
I love the sun, and how it shines on me as
I sip a homemade coffee brew.
How when my to-do list is complete,
I can sigh relief and start anew.
The way my love holds my hand, as we walk side-by-side,
the ways in which in my family I can confide.
The soft fur of my little dog,
The writing spaces, like my blog.
You see, these things aren't so big and grand.
But you don't have to look very far, to find
something that makes life sweet and special,
A stroll, a good snack, your toes in warm sand.
It's the small things, the every day things,
that I look forward to, that life brings.
Life is only dull if you allow it to be dull.

Lessons From My Childhood

‘When I was a child, I acted like a child, thought like a child, played like a child,’
But I am no longer a child.
Yet, the ways of a child are so beautiful and gentle and sweet, there are things I wish to keep about myself from those times,
Things I may have to try to recreate in myself because I lost my way here and there.
I wish to keep the deep love I have for my mother and father, and have deep love for others without judgment of their past or present, because only God knows their future.
I wish to keep on hoping and dreaming, even if it doesn’t always correlate to reality - life is more fun when you have an imagination.
I wish to be looking to others for help, to be willing to be taught and given advice to, and hear the elders’ stories, because, in humble admittance, I cannot do everything alone - though, now I can tie my shoes.
I wish to shout and dance and spin and laugh, without restriction. Adulthood can be restricting, even though it is all we ever wished for as young ones.
You should see me sometimes. I walk barefoot as often as possible, no one to remind me I should at least be wearing socks.
I still like to climb trees, tire-swing, jump-rope, hit up the trampoline, and try out the monkey bars, though it is much more difficult to do than I remember.
I also still really like fireworks, and bubbles, and teddy-bears, and want a grown-up jeep (omit Barbie logo and fake brakes.)
I never did learn to do the splits, but I sure do still like banana splits. Extra whip, please.
I still look up to my grandparents, and get excited about Christmas presents, and giggle on the morning of my birthday.
Some childhood things never leave us, and that is what I will always wish for.

A Hidden Beauty

If you've ever been bullied, you wouldn't be too keen,
of the person who harmed you, who made you feel unseen,
and though they did you wrong and hurt you various ways,
you got older and realized, it was probably just a phase.
For all you know, their parents bullied them,
and that's why they'd ruin your experiments in chem.
For all you know, their older sibling bothered them often,
And when you view it that way, it causes your heart to soften.
No, no, of course what they did was wrong,
They made you feel as though you didn't belong.
But now you're older and more mature,
And these days you wouldn't allow that behavior to endure.
But you were that bully to someone else because of the way you felt
Because you didn't have an outlet either and you mirrored them in how you dealt.
Bullying isn't beautiful, but people surely are.
Choose to look beneath the mess, the flaws, that scar,
Choose to give them the benefit of the doubt and raise the bar.
View them as beautiful, because maybe because of you, they'll truly believe they are.

Love Inside My Castle

I glide around the grounds of my home
It is a castle built by the inspiration of St. Peter's in Rome.
My wings I spread
Choosing not to tread
Upon the green grass of my grounds -
Taking in each possible melodic sound.
It is majestic, it is a pure white,
It is, indeed, a lovely sight.
Inside my home, 300 rooms I have built
I own art with which to see it's abstractedness one's head must tilt.
The corridors are grand,
The bedrooms each have royal beds and lampstands
The dining room is lit by ten chandeliers
It is beautiful - but it is the love found inside my home
that brings you to tears.

A Deep Kiss

I am not asking you to kiss me the way any man could - with lust in his heart & fire in his eyes,

Cheating me into believing they care so that they can taste of my body - even uttering lies,

It is that sort of kissing that causes a woman’s heart to grow sad and causes love to die.

No, a deep kiss carries the meaning of a thousand exchanged glances, has much to signify.

It signifies the crashing waves upon the shoreline driven daily to remind the sand it wants to be close, the symbolism of a heart that no longer can quiet it’s love,

A sign that, perhaps, you were destined to be together and were therefore orchestrated from above.

A deep kiss signifies ten-thousand warm breezes.

Deep kissing requires patience yet an amorous heart, and when your lover’s lips are felt upon your own - your heart seizes.

Your breathing slows, and your mind disappears into the vastness of time and space,

Your love for one another bursts, into spectacular butterfly kisses, and your heart melts after each heavenly taste.

You don’t think about what’s next on the agenda for the day - you simply enjoy each other in the very moment and strive to do so in a variety of ways.

A deep kiss is strong - it is true - it is love - it is an extension of the love that you have for one another.

It creates connection, brings you both into a state of heartfelt love, and you wish to be no other place than with your love.

So let us kiss deeply and kiss truly - as an extension of love from the heart & not because we crave or lust.

Let each and every kiss be valuable and taken into account - let each one create a more loving trust.
