Old School

I can turn up that street any time I wish;
I pass that post box frequently enough,
But there is no returning, that’s the twist,
Time’s poker faced, you cannot call his bluff.

The deepest yearning only meets rebuff,
These houses do not greet me, I’m not missed
And the old school where I seldom did enough
To satisfy my teachers has forgot

The bully and the joker and the swot
The cigarettes, the Three Card Brag, the fights,
The wondering how to talk to girls, and what
Might be waiting round the corner out of sight.

To come so far and barely move at all;
To not escape the gravity of things beyond recall.

The Power and the Glory

When all our tomorrows have faded away
And memories gather around
When shadows are long and the shades hide decay
When stillness is swallowing sound

Still we’ll have no idea where we are bound
And still we won’t know what to say
As we ready ourselves to go into the ground
All worry let go and resolved

All misdemeanours and onus absolved
At the top of the circle the end of the line
Seeing the face of the moon has revolved
And altered the measure of time

Thine is the Kingdom, the power and the glory
Mine is a twist and a line in a story

My Love Is

My love is constant as the clouds
That flit across the sky.
In sleep I call her name aloud

Though when awake I am too proud
To let her hear me cry.
My love is constant as the clouds

Her fertile valleys I have ploughed
And over them I fly.
In sleep I call her name aloud

Does her affection wear a shroud?
If so she won’t say why.
My love is constant as the clouds

She picked me from the madding crowd,
It’s her rules that apply.
In sleep I call her name aloud

With such sincerity avowed
Am I to be denied?
My love is constant as the clouds
In sleep I call her name aloud

My Contst Pom

Good morning ma’am, how do you do?
How I wish I was going with you
On a trip on a boat
With a sail for a coat
Crossing rain, sky, and windy storms too

Lady of the North

Child of the Northern Lights
Blown in on a winter gale
Dance with the Stars at Night
High as the Moon and as pale.

Deep are the Oceans you sail
On curious shores to alight
Your footsteps in sand entail
Revelation – a secret revealed

Understanding remaining concealed
Your journey has barely begun
And the wounds that are still to be healed
Require further exposure to Sun

Align your keel, Northward at the Meridian
Tilt sail and oar, to infinite viridian

A Helping Hand

To be honest my friend, when I’m at a loose end
I can fall prey to worry and fear
So give me a shout and I may help you out
When your burden’s too grievous to bear

I will offer my hand that together we’ll stand
United and facing down fear
And with every shared breath we will contradict death
So that just for today we are spared.

Cast and Crew

Exfoliated Eddie is an eagle eyed spy
He likes hot Hoxton coffee with his cold Shepherd’s Pie
Crazy for a Sheffield lass, a Steel City shrew
Her conversation’s retro but her attitude is new.

Flopping like a flapper in a 20s Bluebell hat
Comes Information Irene with her ever ready chat
With Rock steady Rory making stories out of facts
Their veracity is skinny but they’re generous like that.

Annihilation Annie’s sitting waiting for a fool
She never wants to play the game but loves to break the rules
At the table by the window now she’s looking out the door
Left her right glove on the bus and dropped the other on the floor

Say goodnight to the sailors, say good heavens to the sea
The light on the horizon must remain a mystery

Nancy joined the Navy but she never had a chance
Argued with the Admiral, got lagging at the dance
She’s dreaming of the oceans from the comfort of the land
And she’ll empty out your pockets if you offer her your hand

The sailors are all sleeping now, in softly rocking beds,
No mattress for their bodies and no pillow for their heads

Say goodnight to the sailors, say good gracious to the sea
The light on the horizon must remain a mystery

Dark Matter

Dark Matter does exist
They said so on the radio today
It seems that scientists
Are working on another way to say

What we know anyway;
That stars determine, we are powerless
And gravity must have the final say
Form and substance fold away from sight

Entropy extinguishes the light
Perspective is diverted from it’s course
The universe, no longer infinite
Is fragile as the filament that links us to the source

Out across the waters of the formless silent deep
A goddess dreams a lotus in the vacuum of her sleep

The Green Man

A cacophony of chlorophyll
Drugs molluscs and insects
The slap hazard colourful
Spring riot resurrects

Angels that genuflect
Terrible and wonderful.
Free from death life forgets
How it had felt to lie

Frozen beneath the sky
Searching the slightest
Spark to ignite the eye

In the deep forest
Cobwebs assume the earthy damp of shrouds
Flowers bloom, full and fat as clouds

Keeping Our Distance

The Moon exists beyond our atmosphere
The ever restless exile of the skies
Beckoning but never drawing near
Excluded but dictating to the tides

All heaven’s bodies kneel before the Sun
The glory that advances on the West
Yet night returns when Victory is won
The Moon wears wreaths of cloud about her breast

The forces that align me to your orbit
Collude with others holding us apart
I am in your power and can’t avoid it
But can I ever penetrate your heart?

What chance for those as powerless as we?
The dance is set, it’s how things have to be.
