Supraja Kannan Poem
A sudden rain
cloaked the rail path
Lightning strikes were furious
Thunder storms drum big
Windows drenched in rain
Unable to see the scenes
Uncertain about the future
As we were trapped inside
Dreading the journey,
Holding my dad's fingers
I closed my eyes;
Leaning on his arms
Lamenting the harms
Frightened me, cried
To wipe out my tears,
he made me hear
his childhood memories
and funny stories
To obliterate my fear,
he enunciated his, failed cracks
and success tracks
"Beleive in the driver
and relish the journey"
He boldly advised
By sharing his life's journey
He made that messy journey
The memorable one
The stories I heard on that ride
could be correlated with all the current
and future circumstances
The lesson I assimilated
Is my guiding light
Even after the halt of the train
The words he uttered
resonated deeply inside
and still resonating
even after his demise
and will keep on resonating
throughout my life
Happy Father's day

Supraja Kannan Poem
Emerald green that shines on
gleaming green jewel bug
Algae green of the serene pond
And there swim the shoveler ducks
Harlequin green from areca leaves pinnate
Softly grins when sunrays gently penetrate
And the dark green on betel leaves
Oh ho, the deep red on tongue it leaves
Light green of the Mandevilla
That climbs high to shine bright
Mixed hues of the leaves of taro root
And turquoise green on the crystal clear Lake
O! The iridescent green hues
of peafowls whose vibrant colors ooze
off his pretty long feathers,
Do I need to apprise further?
Green paddy field glares
And sways like a girl's hair
Teal green from singing river
Accumulates minerals and delivers
Did I mention the grass green?
Hey! Isn't our earth's screen?
Raising that lustrous curtain,
unfolds vivid scene by scene
Our earth breaths through these shades of green
Without these green, there is no pleasant scenes

Supraja Kannan Poem
Boated through the tantalizing Kerala backwater
in a pleasant summer morning;
Coconut groves were adorning
our way and perky fishes were chased by river otters
Cacophony of the swaying lofty coconut trees
and the nearby evergreen plants
produced a mesmerizing chant
that certainly consoled the chaotic minds and appease
Majestic banyan tree with its spiraled pillar branches
enthralled the endemic birds
and the migrating animal herds
on the river bank, renovated the place into the ranch
Suddenly the boat entered into the hollow way
where tangled trees made archways,
and fallen flowers filled our pathways
welcomed us, it was such an unforgettable day
Reflections of the slender palm trees on the waters,
painted a flawless picturesque picture
with the kaleidoscope of colors and mixtures
Which was untapped only in the perpetual back waters
Coots and cormorants swiftly plunged into water
When they heard the sound of the boat
Tranquility of the place calmed the hysteria
and it led to the apocalypse of worldly emotions

Supraja Kannan Poem
The peacocks dance
at grove near the cool pond;
and the lotuses brace
lamps like raised heads;
Nimbus clouds thrum
like loud drums;
and violet lilies scrutinize
the scene with bulbous eyes;
Hushed wavelets
array like curtains;
and the bees harmonize sweet songs,
like soothing tunes of (fish-shaped) harp;
Amidst this picturesque place,
the MARUDHAM is enthroned
*Marudham- The God of fertile land
The old Tamil literature describes the five species of lands,
kurunji-mountain land
marudam-cultivated land/farm land
mullai- forest land
neydal-beach/maritime tract
paalai- desert
This is my translation of a poem from Kamba Ramayanam
Kamba Ramayanam, is a Tamil epic that was written by the Tamil poet Kambar during the 12th century. Based on Valmiki's Ramayana (which is in Sanskrit), the story describes the life of King Rama.

Supraja Kannan Poem
When memories flash,
just color splash
the happy ones,
and fade out
the sad ones...
for the happy memories
help you flourish
and the sad stories
are not to cherish

Supraja Kannan Poem
This is our precious Earth
It's high time we savvy its worth
When the King Sun emerges in the east
When the waxing moon smiles dark sky amidst
When little seeds pierce the earth's sheet
When fluffy white waves nudge our feet
Praise our precious Earth
And merrily savvy its worth?
On perceiving the terrific designs on butterflies
While admiring the stunning colors of dragonflies
And the vivid shapes of insects and little bugs
While seeing the colorful snails and black slugs
Just praise our precious Earth
And try to savvy it's worth
When the life saving rain drops glitter
When the lovable pet animals utter
When night loving katydids sing lullabies
When responsible parent birds feed babies
When mushrooms bloom out of trash towers
When deserted land blushes in cactus flowers
Remember this could happen only in our Earth
And so save our earth by exclaiming its worth
When the blue skies and green grasses grin
And the lofty trees and mountains shine
While glimpsing the beautiful landscapes
While relishing the rivers and their shapes
Remember, this is possible only in our Earth
Failing to fathom its mere worth
Will be the sinful mistake we ever commit
To the future generations; We gotta admit
Our mother earth is precious
She is too gracious
So savvy her worth
Save our earth

Supraja Kannan Poem
Oh, my dear honorable poet!
Words recess when I write about you
For, they start loving you
You were a sincere lover,
when you wrote about love;
You were a lovable mother,
when you wrote about a child;
You were a faithful leaf,
when you wrote about trees;
You were the struggling last breath,
when you praised the air;
You were the righteous river,
when you sang about the falls;
You were the boundless sky,
when you sang for the birds;
you were the yearning bare land,
when you wrote about the rain;
You were the trustworthy soldier,
when you wrote about patriotism;
You were the jubilant mother nature,
when you wrote about nature;
You were the powerful priest,
when you praised the lord
Through your worthy words,
you gave life to the abandoned swaying rope;
Your notable notes,
persuaded songs to the singing koels;
Your incredible imageries,
granted countless ideas for the poets;
Your romantic rhythms,
enriched soulful meaning to the ragas;
Your powerful patriotic songs
obliterated the superfluous fears
and your proud personal life
taught us self-respect
Note: September 11 marks the death anniversary of India’s firebrand poet and a revolutionary thinker from Tamil Nadu, Subramania Bharati. In a relatively short life span of 39 years, Bharati left an indelible mark in India’s history as not only a Tamil poet but also as a national icon.

Supraja Kannan Poem
By clasping the lightning string
I reach the sky
Wondrous view there, I spy
Sitting on the fluffy clouds
I roam everywhere
Outspread clouds, my magic chairs
Crafting shapes out of clouds
I drive a dinosaur,
Sometimes rabbits, lion and omnivores
Goading the animals
I explore the sky's grandeur
And search for the heaven's door
Seeing a big dark black figure
I shout aloud
He does magnetize all the fluffy clouds
No shades of blue, all black now
I sit on top there
Wondering, is everything fair?
Suddenly the thunderstorms drum
I cascade down
As a raindrop and reaches a town
On seizing me
A child in the town, grins cheerfully
And the entire town, receive me gladly
Glimpsing above
On seeing the dark black figure, they bow
Gratitude for having his darshan, they show
Not all angels wear white dress
Plenty of them are in disguise
I perceived!!!

Supraja Kannan Poem
One day
One fine day
I touch the sky
The sky
The blue sky
Speaks volumes high
Up there
High up there
Sways the moon fair
The moon
The waxing moon
Plays engrossing tune
I chase
I sternly chase
The moon's grace
Moon embraces
It exulantly embraces
Takes me to the divine places
Sitting on
the crescent moon
I merrily wander around
I sing
I jubilantly sing
To the tunes of moon
A song
A lovely song
We sing along
The spirit
The heavenly spirit
Grants the spiritual treat
It's the day
It's the very day
I linger in the sky
Watch the wonderful world
