We Sit Quietly and Listen

Me sitting on a folding chair
Maria lent us for the initial days
In the middle of an empty room
Next to a computer on a small folding table
Billy, our cat, fearfully inching between the lanai door
Looking at the shades of the leaves
The breezy bushes and the sun play on the lanai walls
We listen attentively to the new pleasant sounds
Made by the gentle warm breeze playing with the leaves
Occasionally interrupted by the sound of the water birds
We are learning to discern these sounds
Of the Florida’s little nature around the house
It’s the art of discerning, to cut out the disturbing
The monotonous humming of the interstate 75
That passes in a hearing distance to our house
Nothing is ever perfect, even the nature's sounds

Our Little Friend

Our little friend

Who knows what is its sex, it is difficult to say
But regardless, being reckless, we named him Donald
That implies, in any case, that it is him.

He is intense, always on guard
He has a pointed face, with sharp beady eyes
His four spider-like legs
Make him look like a crocodile
Except for his lithe body of a small size.

He is obviously very smart
He does not miss any a tiny, weeny fly
He hides with us, among the lanai’s pots and plants
At night and even during the day
He even nibbles the crumbs of food that fall away.

His favorite resting position
Is, being perched on the upper, outer side of a lanai’s clay pot
Presumably, because he can see the world and it’s nice and warm
When we come in, he greets us in response
By swiftly vanishing among the pots.

We love him and, talk about and to him
We have a deep emotional involvement
When we do not see him, we worry about his whereabouts
We also are concerned about his health and weight
Eating food he evolutionary never had.

We are also concerned about the appropriateness of his name
Being so smart, timid, gentle and sane
His character does not bear resemblance to our future president
After whom he got his name
Perhaps in future we may change the name
Of our dear lovable gecko pet.

A Lament For How It No Longer Is As It Used To Be

It is my knee
It no longer is as it used to be
I used to be able to jog, bike, and run on cross country skis
Teach yoga for many years; do yoga on my own
Where ever I would go
In the mountains, on a plane, and every morning
As I got out of bed
Last time I did it on the beach, I could stand on one leg
As long as it would take to fix my gaze and my mind
At that pristine heavenly blue distant sky
My mind calm without a thought purified my soul
That all was a month ago

Since then due to my torn meniscus things have changed
The meniscus, a piece of rubber like tissue
Between the knee joints
Its function, to protect the knee bones
From rubbing each other off
For 70 years, this piece of tissue served me well
I never knew it even existed
But a month ago, on the left leg, with one single twist
I tore the left side of the meniscus
And this little two inch tear has changed many things

I have to keep the knee in a steady state
To let the meniscus heal itself
Not twisting, twiddling, pulling or stretching
Only hoping, that one day
The injured meniscus will heal itself
And thing will be as they used to be
Not less not more, just as they used to be.
(Naples Feb 15, 2015)

That was a year ago
My meniscus did heal on its own
I can now do whatever I want
But the wisdom of what happened a year ago
Is still with me, to prevent me from further injury
I am grateful that it is almost as it used to be.
