Red Dreams

I went to Mars on one of my trippy dreams,
Where red was the color of every theme.
Red was everything that one needs.
Red like the color of the blood I bleed.

Red were the rocks and the sea,
And red was the lock and the key.
Red like the blush on a girl’s cheeks,
Red like the Indians of the creek.

And the Martians were so red
That they looked sore from toe to head.
Red was the hue of the wine and the bread.
Everybody was red, be it the living or undead.

Now this redness started giving me frights,
There was a red sun, red trees & red moon in the night.
The color of courage was on my left & my right.
I was going insane, couldn’t withstand this sight.

So, I opened my eyes & got out of my sleep.
After Mars, my usual surroundings now looked creep.
I set aside my red pillow & removed my red bed sheet.
Got into my red slippers to cover my feet.

Then, I got out and saw various shades around me,
Violet, green & yellow seemed so delightful to see.
It felt nice to see all those colors after the bizarre dream,
Where red was the color of every theme.

Ode To the Narwhal

Ode to the Narwhal

The marine waters have some animals, which are as graceful as they could be.
And one such aquatic creature is the narwhal, the unicorn of the sea.

Swimming with a horn tearing up the turquoise tides,
The Arctic waters is where this porpoise resides.

Oh narwhal, the sun shines on your grey whale skin;
And then you swim below eating small fish with fins.

Oh narwhal, how did you get that beautiful horn on your head?
You truly are one quirky beast of the sea bed.

So I wish that you don’t get hunted down & live on for 40 years,
Lest the sea level would rise with your brothers’ gloomy tears.

Sometimes I feel like drifting in the blue, be strayed away & lost,
Plunging in the frigid waters of the Northern Frost.

Oh narwhal, welcome me to your aquatic domain.
Teach me how to dive to glory, help me to relieve my pain.

Keep on living underwater while I write this ode,
Perhaps one day, I will witness your magical abode.

Free Slaves

Jim was a young black lad,
In the era of slavery in the States.
And there was nothing he had,
Except a merciless owner filled with hates.

He worked hard on the plantation all day,
Only to face discrimination & pain.
He pined for days when he would live his way,
And would be free and sans chain.

One day, while dusting master’s house with his frail hands,
Jim broke a priced souvenir which earned him whips,
And also harsh words which were tough to withstand.
Later, with teary eyes he asked God why was he cursed with curly hair & big lips?

The following morn, when master’s baby was fast asleep;
The homestead was being consumed by the flames of a fuming fire.
The child woke up mewling loudly with constant weep,
While distressed master watched helplessly as the flames went up higher.

Now who could save his little son?
From the blazes & sparks burning the house?
And right when everyone thought that the kid could be saved by no one.
The hero inside Jim did arouse.

With guts & courage, he jumped into the fire, took a dive,
Trying to save the boy with all his might & lots of pluck.
And after a few minutes of struggle, master’s boy came out alive.
But sadly Jim got burnt; nothing could save him, neither prayer nor luck.

Amidst the relief and happiness that his child got saved,
Something touched the master’s stone heart & he broke into tears,
For he couldn’t even thank that young slave.
It was something which would haunt him for years.

The boy’s demise had made him repent his evil deeds & malicious sins.
He went into a state of depression & began questioning his own soul.
Repented he deeply on his acts of malice on people with black skin,
Realizing that he only had a white hide but a heart as black as coal.

so the next day, all his slaves roamed unchained & free from slavery;
As master freed them all with a sense of redemption.
And the slaves who were leaving, saluted the late Jim for his bravery,
A boy whose actions had shown that even hatred can be turned into love & affection.

Four Seasons, One Life

Saw a tree with blooming hues of Iris on a merry day of spring.
It felt like the youth of a fine, young lad;
Who doesn't care what others think, just enjoys & has a fling.
But one day, these would just be some memories which the tree had.

Summer came with the rays from the ball of fire,
The tree's trunk got thicker & it did gain some height.
Squirrels resided while men took its shade as the temperatures went higher.
And the green child of nature stood there for day & night.

Then came the winds of change; it was the time of fall.
The tree's once bright leaves faded like a mortal's grey hair.
Around it were rustling leaves and its brothers, green & small.
Though the tree rings increased, it still continued cleaning the air.

Autumn gave way to winter when its branches were adorned with flakes,
And a blanket of white covered all other trees around.
The tree felt stillness as no hibernating creature was to wake,
It had no leaves that would rustle; so it was just the chilly wind that made a sound.

The cycle of seasons continued till a time came when the tree faded away,
At least it had played its roles of this life & had a satisfied end.
Even we arrive in this world like a tender sapling and then fade in a mysterious way,
Because all these things are inevitable & so is life, my dearest friend.

Riding On With a Beating Heart

Sometimes a normal life can become epic,
But this thing called fate has a bag full of tricks.

Every day in my village, out of the window,
I saw the face of a graceful belle who had the sun’s glow.

I wanted to confess my love for her but the time wasn’t right;
A mysterious man from the faraway castle kidnapped her one night.

She needed help I thought; she left without a goodbye.
I knew I needed to do something not just lament & cry.

So the cat inside me turned into a lion,
And I rode off on my steed with arms of iron.

I travelled for long, cold nights, ten,
In the Valley of Ice where everything was frozen.

The only thing keeping me alive was my love,
As I faced creatures like that dragon from above.

The scaly beast wanted to eat me; it roared loudly bringing my ears pain.
But the sound created an avalanche and the next moment, it got slain.

I kept on walking, covered in white from head to toe.
Little did I know that I was yet to face the wicked dwarves of the snow?

But on seeing me half frozen, half wounded, they got scared and ran.
The puny blokes might have thought that I am an abominable snowman!

So after surviving these hours of tiredness & frustration,
I finally saw the gates of that majestic castle; I had reached my destination.

The doors to the fort were surprisingly not closed.
And the deadly crocodiles in the pool had lazily dozed.

I got inside and saw a hairy, cruel looking beast.
Looked like he could eat a hundred men for a feast.

I felt like killing him but his sight had turned my skin white & pale.
Then I saw that he was being hugged by a belle, it was the same female.

I got shocked but she told me the beast was actually kind.
And so she began to love her abductor; I realized that love was blind!

The brute turned out to be a good fellow with a heart of gold.
Needed he someone to give him company in this lonely blanket of cold.

Then I bid the couple adieu with a heavy heart.
And I rode on to a new place for a new start.

I had cheated death but failed to win the girl who I thought was mine.
Still, I’m not distressed anymore, at least she’s smiling & fine.

Songs of Power-Winds of Change

Back in the days of the capitalist & commie regiments,
There was a structure that separated states & sentiments.
Mother Germania was divided by an expansive wall.
But someday this fence of Berlin had to fall.

Kennedy gave speeches, Gobrachev was asked to tear it down.
But nothing much happened, the Jerries still had their frowns.
Men were shot or taken away if caught on the dreaded border strips.
Only the daring Germans from East dared to make the “other side’ trips.

Brothers were torn apart, mothers couldn’t see their sons,
Peace movements & the media tried to protect the identity of Germans.
Finally, Hungary allowed the citizens to cross their country to the West.
Now the partition became less effective; people began to hope for the best.

In 89’, the sons of Germania picked up their sledgehammers.
Driven by the spirit of patriotism, they began breaking the Berlin divider.
No more dirty politics, the future had become bright.
Finally after bloodshed, it was a glory night.

Now, there’s no East or West, just the German nation,
A state built by power of the people after attempts of unification.
So the world once knew a thing called THE BERLIN WALL.
But nothing lasts forever; someday the structure had to fall.

Heart of Darkness In the Valley of Light

Don’t hold on,
To the feeling that I will stay.
Cos’ I’ll be long gone tomorrow,
With the arrival of the first sun ray.

I don’t desire to leave,
But I must suit up and fight.
Wipe off some darkness,
That engulfs the white valley of light.

The shelling & stone pelting carries on,
These are troubled times and all must keep calm.
Kashmir shows me that these divisions,
These boundaries and religions bring us nothing but harm.

Sometimes, I’ll show justice,
Sometimes, I’ll show my wrath and kill.
Sometimes, the natives will hate me,
While the journalists and activists will have their fill.

An icy fear grabs my heart,
And beads of sweat form on my forehead.
At times, even the bravest soldier feels afraid,
I don’t wish that my blood stains this white snow red.

Amidst cramped bunkers, I and my men hope,
Amidst this hell, we yearn to make it out alive.
Amidst this insurgency and militant maelstrom,
We long to gaze at the face of a little child & a loving wife.

But it’s time to stop my fretting and pick up arms,
Got not a clue till when this darkness will last.
Meanwhile, the only thing that keeps me alive is my wish to come back home,
When Kashmir’s river of tears will dry up, when it’ll just be a figment of the past...

Dim Lights In Midnight

Sometimes, I wander outside in the hours of midnight.
And boy, every time I'm welcomed with a strange sight.

There is this ominous silence, no mewling babies and howling banshees.
And the moon looks like a shining, white pearl of the dull, black seas.

The god Hypnos lulls the stray dogs and even the watchmen to sleep.
There is hardly any soul to notice me loitering around like a creep.

All shutters are down and the one hue that you see is black.
A few brats lay on the pavement after an overdose of smack.

Only a few cars are to be seen; the street lights have also turned dim.
When the clock strikes twelve, this night vibe is both amusing and grim.

Finally after a few hours of dawdling, I see the rising sun giving out its radiant light,
And I realize that I actually found more solace when the city slept in the midnight!

Castles In the Sand

There were castles in the sand,
Built by young, nimble hands.
Thought we could stay in the castle forever, you and me.
But it all faded with every breaking wave from the sea.

Having nothing to worry about, we stared at the painted sky,
While our brain’s camera capture the seagulls flying high.
Thought this moment will stay forever; we’ll be stuck in this time frame.
But time flew, life changed and nothing seems the same.

Sometimes, I do see castles in the sand, oh what a blissful sight!
And it takes me back to the joyful days and dreamy nights.
I suddenly feel my long lost childhood is found,
As soon as I hear Poseidon’s wavy sound.

We are all in castles of sand,
Built by the Creator’s hands.
No one knows what’s in store for you and me,
So let’s live life before our castle fades away with the sea.

Christmas With Christ

Senator Pilate has given the judgment,
He will be taken to the cross tomorrow.
But there is no line of fear on his face,
While we are shedding tears in sorrow.

I remember the first time I saw him,
It still feels like it was just yesterday.
It was a serene scene with those angels,
And the three men bowing their heads to pray.

It happened three decades ago in Bethlehem.
I was young and so was the cold December night.
Limping on my way, I saw an old man dying of hunger,
So I gave him my last piece of bread seeing his plight.

And then suddenly a winged entity came from nowhere,
‘O doer of good deeds, within you love & kindness blooms.
Go to the manger ahead and seek the messiah’s blessings,
And you will never be damned to hell or walk the path of gloom.’

Saying these words, the angel disappeared in thin air.
When I reached the stable, it was sight to behold!
A holy light shone around the Lord’s son, the baby King of Israel.
And laid around him were gifts of frankincense, myrrh & gold.

I got on my knees to seek his blessings, he touched my forehead,
Right at that moment, my stiff leg suddenly got fine.
My eyes grew watery in happiness; this was a miracle.
Now joy would come on the world with the birth of the redeemer divine.

Everyone yelled ‘Glory to God in highest heaven,’
And I asked Mary & Joseph about the reason behind my cure.
To give the answer, the heavenly angel appeared and said,
‘Jesus will help all those who are true and have a soul pure’.

So Mary’s boy child has changed a lot since the first Noel,
Now he’s a fine young man who delivers sermons from the hill.
And even if he’s leaving us, he will remain forever in our hearts,
Guiding us on the path of righteousness & delivering us from evil.

HALLELUJAH!
